I carry mine on a trailer but I'm just looking for ideas on how long the bars should be. I know I can cut them down just didn't know if anyone has any ideas

Again, it depends. If you're using J-racks then they don't have to be as wide as if you don't since the yaks will be tilted. If flat, then I guess I'd measure the width of the yak, multiply by 2 and add a few inches either side

It really depends on where you are placing the kayak relative to the racks as they get narrower on the ends. All you really need is enough for the kayak to sit on, the rounded sides of the kayak can stick out as long as you have a secure point to attach the strap to once it comes around the kayak.

    Here's my setup:

Well, no. If beam is 33", then beam X 2 (66") is only at one point - likely near center* which isn't a point to be tying down. The centerlines are 33" apart, so at the ends of the boats the outside max width is slightly larger than 33" - also not a tie-down point. Carrying flat, as asked, the needed width is going to depend on how far apart your bars are... which is dependent on curvature.

*"likely near center" -- for symmetrical hull.

Not J racks, I have two pairs of Yakima LandSharks which is enough to hold two kayaks. Each kayak is 33 inches wide so I was thinking around 70 inches but might need to be a little longer.

Starting my kayak search for a fishing kayak this summer. love my surfing kayak, but it's a real dog when it comes to fishing or longer distance travel.

looking for a single person fishing kayak (or kayak that I can outfit with some rod holders). storage requirements are that I'd like to have the ability to strap my 20qt yeti to it, and still have some room for at least a mid sized waterproof bag. built-in waterproof storage would be nice, but not a requirement. looking for a comfortable seat or back support that won't kill me after a couple of hours.
would like to limit it to $1000 if possible. thoughts/suggestions?

I have a wilderness system ride 115 and love it. I would say Wilderness or Jackson are the best two brands you can get.

Old town Predator 13. It's just over budget at $1200 but they are amazing. I'm picking up an MX this spring.
Check them out. If you're fishing you definitely want a sit on top. The seat raises very high and your not sunk down in the boat. You can easily stand up as well which is why I like it for fly fishing.

My friend had an ascend and it was rather bulky and heavy. Didn't really cut through the water too well. I personally have a 12 ft Kaku Wahoo that is more of a streamline yak. However, these run at about $1000 with the rudder but I did buy mine from a kayak store that had demoed it a few times and he sold it to me for $600. Thing was practically new.

just checked out both brand's sites. great options from both companies. thank you

very nice kayaks! $1200 is completely fine, i was just trying to eliminate suggestions for $2500 kayaks, because if i choose to jump to that price range, i'll just go straight to a hobie.

Here's the Kaku Wahoo. Mine has been good to me so far. I've had it about 9 months now. Big area in the back and locking hatch up front.

The biggest thing is the seating system. Look at the adjustability of the height.
I would stay away from any kayak that has a stationary height setting.
Also, look at the accessory options. Do you want a fish finder? How many poles do you want to carry? What kind of gear will you be carrying?

The Hobie's are awesome! I have a friend that sells them and even with a deal I don't want to spend that kind of money, especially when I can get an Old Town for less than half the price.

Check out YouTube for videos and reviews on the kayaks you have in mind. That way you can see the options and how they differ.

I don't mind having a fixed height for my seat. The height it is at is fine for paddling and when I fish, I am standing up with good stability.
