    Indirect free kick:

An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper, inside his own penalty area, commits any of the following four offences:

Controls the ball with his hands for more than six seconds before releasing it from his possession

Touches the ball again with his hands after he has released it from his possession and before it has touched another player

Touches the ball with his hands after it has been deliberately kicked to him by a team-mate.

Touches the ball with his hands after he has received it directly from a throw-in taken by a team-mate.

As for the penalty call, that was due there were fouls on Wambach that were just waived on. Officiating was bad for both sides.

Thanks , I know the rule , I played soccer my whole life .

That rule is never called at this level

The reason it is never call is because it is not seen as much, a smart keeper will drop the ball at their feet and dribble around to waste time.

You know it's true. That's how they usually waste time. They wait for you to pressure them, and then they get rid of it.

Yes , that is a way for the keeper to keep possesion , I'm not disputing that .

The Canadian keeper was clearly intending to kick the ball deep upfield , all of the players had moved up pitch .

She had the ball for maybe 8 seconds tops and was obviously about to kick the ball down field .

Sorry , this rule is never called , at most the referee signals the keeper to move the ball

Maybe that's why none of the commentators had any idea what was called and why

In a match of this magnitude , to call a ticky tack thing like that , awarding the US a free kick inside the box , is bullshit .

The resulting penalty could be argued ball to hand , but I'm not going there , whatever , it happened .

It was a terrible call that marred what was otherwise an excellent display by both teams .

Being over the time limit is being over the time limit, you even said 8 seconds, that's more than the 6 seconds said by the rules.

I would argue a bit on excellent display, Tancredi(spelling?) being a player who should have seen red.

HAHAHA, seriously? If only you knew. My grandparents used to own a team in the 1970's, which back in their home town is legendary. They even beat a team that had payed professional top-tier players to be on their team for the championship match. My aunt has been the manager of a team for the last 12 years.
Every male in my family has played, and no we're not talking about rec-league, we're talking club teams and less credible high school, but played in the same league with the team who was ranked #1 U.S. HS team for 2/4 HS years. I wasn't good enough for a D-1 scholarship, so I stopped. Now I just play intramurals.

Why even argue about the ref? Get mad at your defender for not keeping her arms at her side. I've seen plenty of players keep them at their sides, yes they get hit in the face and go down, but guess what, sometimes fair play comes into effect, the play stops. Player is attended to, keeper either kicks it to the other keeper or for a throw in. If that is what would have happened yesterday, well penalty kick avoided.

haha I knew you weren't going to believe me. I wish I had a scanner, for pic proof.
One of the reasons I chose to go to Santa Clara is because the San Jose Earthquakes use Buck Shaw for home games. I get a student discount for tickets, and the players practice there too so it's easy to talk to them.

As for the second part of my original comment, tell me that was not a possibility.

    I don't doubt you at all .
With all your experience in soccer then , have you ever seen that call in elite soccer ?
    No .
Do goalies handle the ball for more than 6 seconds without being called ?
    All the time .

Actually I have, although it is not frequent, I saw it in the Mexican League 2-3 years back, except it was just a regular season match and not as a high a stake. Of course, the ball just bounced off the wall on the resulting free-kick. And yes it happens a lot, but when a keeper has repeatedly done it through out the match, after being warned by the linesman at half time, it has to be called. If some one tells you at half time, you know you have a problem. It's one thing to see it once or twice in the last ten minutes, but for it to happen all game, well sorry.
