My gf keeps one in her purse.. I just put some rounds through it yesterday very surprised at how accurate it is! Puts my bodyguard .380 to shame

I actually had a bodyguard .380 and sold it to buy my j frame. I hated the trigger, and mine had an issue where I could not get the mag in without pressing the mag release. I am much happier with the j frame.

Mine had the same issue smith and Wesson did repair it free but it shouldn't have happened in the first place. For now it fits the need for a pocket gun. With that being said I would gladly trade it or sale for the .38s.

I bobbed the hammer on a 637 and it’s a fantastic pocket gun. I don’t feel undergunned with 5 rounds of 38 for anything up close.

Just recently, I picked up a 637 that was customized by the S&W Performance Center. It is the Wyatt Deep Cover model. They are not making them any longer since Mr. Wyatt was charged with tax evasion. It has the Gunsmoke logo on the barrel. Nice gun though, it includes an action job on the trigger.

Last year I picked up a revolver that's a little older than I am, a Ruger Security Six. First time I took it to the range, I shot tighter groups with it than my semi-autos I've had for years and practiced with a lot more. Lost the photos I had of it when my old phone died, I'll have to take some more.

Now this one is actually quite rare, they only made a couple thousand of them.

I have an old Smith Model 19, 1966 I think, 4" barrel, blued, pinned barrel. I can't shoot that thing accurately for more than say 15 yards. Kinda funny, I exhibited it to a couple fishing buddies and we shot it, thing had such a kick we couldn't figure out why it had a rear sight.

The next fishing season in the Colorado high country same guy goes with me into bear country around the cirque lakes, I holster the Model 19, he asks me why are you hauling that? I say, "Bears". He laughs, says "You can't hit a bear until it's 10 ft from you."

We're fishing after hiking in, Ray says, "Theres a bear up there" Cinnamon bear is checking us out about 40 yards away uphill, sitting on his haunches like a dog behind a down tree. I feel confident in the .357, I clap my hands and yell "Get outta here" a couple times. Cinnamon bear starts to run away uphill, then makes a U-turn around the root ball of the down tree and charges us. I saw the hair standing up on that bear's back from skull to tail and he was looking straight at us, just flying downhill front legs between back. Ray, knowing full well I couldn't hit that bear with the .357 even if it was standing still, yells "Don't shoot, don't shoot" as I'm getting the .357 out of the holster, meanwhile Ray is maneuvering behind me getting ready to jump in the lake.

I figured I'd have to wait until the bear was about 10 yds away then pop off every shot hoping I'd stop it, so I held my ground and waited. Bear must have decided something wasn't going right because it slammed on the brakes about 15 yds away, stared at us as it stalked away from left to right.

Don't let anybody tell you a bear can't charge downhill, I've heard that myth and didn't believe it. Sure enough that bear was not only flying downhill, but it came to a stop in about about five feet. Bear was probably 250-300 pounds but it was agile as a 50 lb dog.

I don't know what the moral of the story is, maybe confidence or overconfidence in a handgun? Since then I carry a Black Labrador Retriever in the high country. They give way more notice.

I carry a Smith .38 Chief's Special these days along with the Black Lab. I can shoot the .38 accurately and it doesn't deafen me like the .357

That's the weirdest revolver story that I've ever heard

Are you any more accurate with it if you shoot .38's through it, since there's less recoil? Or is it still hopeless?

I thought for sure his post was going to end up the “why doesn’t your 357 have a front sight” joke. Good read, all the same.

And Noelie is right - a 4” 357 is wonderfully shootable with even stiff 38 special loads. Sounds like a great alternative to not carrying anything. I’d get some hard cast 38s and hope for the best if you definitely won’t carry 357s.

When I’m in bear country I carry a 44mag with 300 grain hunting loads. Even a 44 mag is just marginal for taking down a bear and a 357 is really inadequate. You can do it with a 357 but you better be a skilled marksman while under stress with a charging bear and you better be lucky. This is for black bears only. If you are in grizzly/brown bear country forget the hand guns and carry either a large caliber rifle or a short or medium barreled shotgun with slugs or 000 buck.
I have a lab too who goes everywhere with me. He’s well trained and will come when called no matter what. If a lab messes with a bear it will be a sad ending for the dog.
