Yeah, I don't expect the Lab to combat a bear, I just want some long range notice if there is a bear sneaking up on us. The two Labs I had before this latest version were good alerters and very courageous. In the tent, truck, or the trailer their sharp ears and sharp eyes give notice. I don't mind being woken up in the middle of the night by growling as long as it's a legit alert. Slap the headlamp on, let the dog seek and hopefully deter.

The Black Lab we had in the tent camping days wouldn't even sleep in the tent, she'd lay outside at the tent door, stay up all night guarding, then sleep during the day. The next Black Lab was a hell-raiser, she had a zest for life, she absolutely loved chasing coyotes at night. That was OK with me since it wasn't bear country out in Utah, Arizona desert. I figured if she wants to chase coyotes it's her decision. She was a small Lab, 55 pounder, mutt would be gone for half the night then wake us up about 0400 barking at the trailer door, drink about a quart of water all proud of herself, then sleep.

This latest version is a mongrel Black Lab mix with some kind of hound mixed in. English Black Lab with the soft thick fur, tan paws. Rez rescue from New Mexico. 60 pounder, thick build. She and the coyote chaser had good times together out in the desert.

Coyote chaser passed on, Rez dog is an easy going dog, is having a competition with the kit foxes here in Nevada this winter.

Per the recommendation of Alaska Fish & Game - this is what I'm taking on my DIY Alaska river/float trip this August with my 870 Express.

I have to have it on me at all times as I'm the designated "gun guy" of the group. I need to practice fly-fishing with it slung over my shoulder. I won't be able to carry my sling pack, so I'll be fishing light with just a couple of small boxes in my wader jacket pockets.

Those are what I keep loaded in my shotgun anytime I’m out when the bears aren’t hibernating. I always have my 44 in a chest holster and generally have the shotgun nearby unless I’m out in the water.
