Front and rear lockers and regear cost me $3200 plus gas money to ECGS. You can do cheaper if you just buy assembled 3rds from them (better off since you're not close).

Why rear first? I thought front would be superior because it will help pull you up and over

A small handful of select mods.
Your rear axle is much stronger and can take more abuse that get handed out by locking it up. The front is more of an expensive helper locker. If you just relied on a front locker you would probably want to pack about 6 or 7 spare CV axles. Too many moving parts in the front to bind up and shred.

I can see that but if your smart about using the front, only when absolutely needed, you shouldn't break too many cv axles. Don't especially use it when turning because that's when they break the most. Hey, I'll lock the rear first! We will need extra cv axles going out there anyways. Can anyone add to my list of extra parts needed?

    Cv axles
    Hubs
    Spare rim and tire

Also, how long is the trip?

Correct but if it's your only locker, you don't have as much choice in when to use it.

Yea, what about when you get to the crest of the obstical and the rear loses traction.thats when the front will come in hand. Also, how will ATRAC work if the rear is locked???

I locked my front before I did my rear... Only because at the time I could only afford one locker, I hate pulling the front diff so I put the arb in the front first. Then scrounged up enough cash and bought my Detroit and a buddy and I put it in with the help of some bud light haha

You won't need atrac if you're locked anyway.

The front does suck to do. Nice to see someone else with a Detroit rear. I've gotten crap about it before but on the road it's barely noticeable to me except for the extra backlash

I get mine free, if I make it I will try to bring 10 or so for everyone on the trip

The backlash is the only regret. Reason I got mine is because Its proven and I know it's going to work. Arb front Detroit rear is IMO a very good and dependable set up

the problem with the front is it has so little droop and so little articulation that as you are cresting obstacles your front tires have so little weight on them, and lift off the ground much more frequently than the rear. So if you build the truck right, the rear does all the articulation and it keeps both (locked) tires on the ground longer. Also turning with the front locked is very difficult, and of course as soon as you lock the front you are much more prone to snapping cvs. From people that have gotten fronts, the way I hear it is that a rear locker makes your truck 50% more capable and the front locker makes your truck 25% more capable. As in, the front certainly helps (i know I need one at this point) but it doesent help out as much as locking the rear, assuming we are starting with an open/open truck.

Most people with a front locker hardly ever use it in moab, and only use the rear. Because for most trails thats all you need, unless you are tackling the hardest obstacles and trails. But thats also in part no moab being a very unique place where there is traction for motha fuckin days!

That's the exact reason I got my setup that way as well. The backlash isn't bad though. Hasn't caused me any issues. I use my ebrake when I park anyway.
