    b) because its a movie and would probably make for a huge twist

    Lot of pent up emotion and anger. I'm going back to the scene in empire where he has the vision of himself facing off with Vader on Dagoba. After he decapitates Vader the mask explodes showing Luke his own face. After he defeats Vader and the emperor the dark side consumes him and he becomes that which he feared.

    At least that's my vague theory.
