Mine were growing sideways so they had to put me completely under to cut them out. There are about 3 days of my life that I have no recollection of. That shit sucks.

They completely put my ass under too, but I remember waking up and after like 10 minutes I just hopped up out of the chair and was walking fine, but damn I was tanked. They said "how do you feel" "hammered" "do you think you can walk or do you need us to wheelchair you to the car" "I've had plenty of practice, I think I'll be fine" then as I was walking out some dude was getting chaired out and yells "hey, he just got his teeth cut out too" and I looked over at my mom and (apparently very loudly) said, "damn, he's way more fucked up than I am"

Ha ha. Anesthesia will get you. Apparently, according to my wife and mother, I was in a wheelchair in the elevator with the two of them and my nurse. I strarted yelling for them to get my phone and call my best friend, which they did to get me to shut up. He answered. They gave me the phone and I proceeded to tell him how hot my nurse was. Damn.

Ok here's another one while we're on the topic. It's kinda fucked up at first but hilarity follows so hang with me.

Long story short, a few years ago I was having kidney problems so the doctor decided to take a look. The way they take a look is by running a tiny camera up your... Past your bladder to your kidney. They put me in what they call twilight sleep. Before hand I was sitting on a table with my pants around my ankles. That detail is key. Remember it. Fast forward to the end of the procedure.

I wake up and "feel" fine. The doctor and two young female nurses tell me to stay seated. I didn't realize that although i felt fine, my body wasn't fully awake yet. I was ready to go so I hopped off the table (forgetting I was bare assed and my pants were at My ankles)

Naturally, I face planted the floor, still bare assed. They had to help me up and pull up my pants for me. Talk about a major dent in your pride.

I had that scope procedure 3 times in the last year. If it wasn't so painful (Nothing for pain in my case) I would have been impressed at how freekin long that thing is they shoved up inside me. The 3rd time, they used a surgical catheter and ran the scope inside that. Sorta like having a piece of 2" PVC pipe shoved up your pecker. Then I went into bladder spasms while it was in me. I can honestly say I know what "10" on the 1 to 10 pain scale is all about now....

Best part was the nurse practitioner who worked for the urologist. She was a dead ringer for Shania Twain. I was all for her grabbing my junk whenever she was so inclined. Every time she walked in the room, I was volunteering to take my pants off.

8 months to diagnose the problem.....(Kidney cancer) It took less than 2 hours to cure the problem once they finally did the CORRECT surgery. They took out about 10% of my right kidney through three 1" incisions. Haven't felt as good as I do now in 10 years. All I have to do now is to have an MRI every 6 months for the rest of my days. This is what kept me away from LBL this past March.

The first symptoms pointed to a prostate issue. I'd had prostate cancer several years ago. It was treated with radiation and declared all good. I started feeling bad about this time last year. Me, Everett and Brent went to Blue Holler ORP last November. I wasn't feeling too good that day and ended up at the emergency rom later that night. I couldn't pee....They dosed me up on meds, sent me home and I managed a couple more days before I was back at the ER. This time I was about to explode. The average human will have 250 to 300 cc of urine in their bladder when they sense it's "time to go". They put a catheter in me and drained over 2700 cc. That was the first time I had bladder spasms. My wife said she could hear me screaming all the way out into the waiting room. It was horrible. They sent me home with a foley catheter in. Most miserable experience to that point. 2 days later, one of my dogs got tangled up in the drain tube on that catheter. I'll just say that got my attention REAL quick. Then they took out the catheter on the day before Christmas Eve so they could run the scope into my bladder. The urologist said I'd be OK. Well, Christmas Day, I spent in the ER AGAIN, getting ANOTHER catheter put in. Then they scheduled a procedure (called a prosteva) for late Feb. I was told I would have to wear a catheter until then. The reason for such a long delay was the doctor was going on vacation.....I lit him up....How could he go spend 3 weeks in the Bahama's. while I laid at home in agony. So he rescheduled the procedure for the very next day BEFORE he left. This procedure, they run the surgical catheter in, then use what he described as a "hot wire" to poke through the urethra in 27 places and burn away small parts of the prostate to take pressure off the urethra so I could pee normal. It feels about as pleasant as it sounds. Each of those 27 "pokes" was excruciating. And only a couple hydrocodone pills for pain control. When I left the hospital later that day, I could finally pee, but mostly blood....It was horrible. 2 days later, I was back at the ER with a massive infection. They dosed my up with antibiotics and sent me home. After 4 days of no relief, they decided to give me stronger antibiotics. This knocked out the infection.....until the antibiotics ran out......then MORE infection. They gave me ANOTHER round of antibiotics, this time for a longer period of time. Same results....infection returned the day after the meds ran out. So....They decided only then to do an MRI to see what was causing all the infection and swelling. 2 days after the MRI, I get a call at 9PM. It was the Urologist. Seems everything up until then was a symptom rather than the actual problem. I had a 6CM "growth" on my right kidney that was causing the bladder and kidney infection. They scheduled surgery as soon as the hospital could get me in. The surgery was done with robotics....3 small incisions. I woke up not even knowing they had done anything. They removed the tumor and a small portion of healthy tissue below it. 90% of my right kidney remains. (didn't effect left kidney) Within 24 hours, I started felling MUCH better. The infection was gone. I was OK.

This type of cancer can (and probably will) return at some point. It may be in the same kidney, or, in the left kidney next time. With that, they make every effort to keep BOTH kidneys as functional as possible in the event one or the other has to be completely removed in the future. Within a few days, I was feeling really good again. There was some pain from having abdominal surgery. I couldn't do any lifting for 5 weeks until the incisions healed completely. And, I'll be having MRI's every 6 months for the rest of my life.

I ended up being scoped 3 times, 2 surgical catheters, 2 weeks of having to insert a catheter myself every time I needed to pee, not to mention all the poking and prodding, and various people grabbing my pecker and sticking things in it....The entire episode was traumatic to say the very least. The first time you have to use a catheter by yourself is the most frightening experience a person can ever go through. After a few times, you learn to relax and just do it....But that first time...I have cold chills just thinking about it.

I'll NEVER take for granted the simple act of peeing when I need to ever again.

This is what I was doing while the LBL camping trip was going on. What I won't do to keep from having to clean um out of my truck, huh?

Catheters are fun. Way more difficult on a woman than a man. I wonder if the carcinoma caused the BPH to begin with. Did they say if it was renal cell or transitional cell? Do I remember you saying that you were on peritoneal dialysis for a while too, or was that someone else? Also in the future, never let them pull more than 500mLs of urine in 30 minutes, or you're guaranteed to have bladder spasms. The most I've pulled off of someone was 2100mLs, and that was with a straight cath, not a foley.

I never got the Urologist to admit to it, but the surgeon told me the infection was causing the BPH. The Urologist seemed to be attempting to avoid a law suit for misdiagnosing the problem early on. That wasn't my intent. I was just trying to get past the entire episode. I seem to recall "renal cell", but may be wrong about that. I had the peritoneal dialysis 2 times prior to the MRI/diagnosis. My primary care physician has told me that was a waste of time and should have not been done. After the nurse drained the 2700mls (I keep getting confused about ML or CC) the ER doc told him to never drain anyone that fast....And explained why as I laid there screaming. I was told that I now have the Baptist East Hospital ER record for amount cathed..... I had an RN take out one catheter while I was in for the surgery that reminded me of someone pulling a pull starter on a lawn mower! Damn that hurt!

Bladder spasms are about as intense as pain can get....And then the med they give to counter them turns the urine glow-in-the -dark orange, which will shock the shit out of you if you don't know THAT'S gonna happen.

Putting a catheter in is bad enough. Putting one in yourself is double whammy....

The Urologist and his boss had a sit down with me afterwards where I explained a few things to his boss. I had a few "concerns" for anyone else who was facing the same issues in the future. My Urologist told me later that he got a severe ass chewing after I left. He's made a few critical errors as this played out. Mostly delaying several procedures in favor of his vacation schedule and sending me home on Christmas Eve without a catheter.
