Having a few years of teaching experience, I do understand the importance of a student/ individual earning their grade.
But damn it would piss me off if she just left it at 89.9
We are talking about a 10th of a freaking %
Good luck friend. Hope they don't screw ya on the GPA

Past the 24 split it's usually moving pretty well. If you're a little late, we'll still be there. I also promise not to cut out the rear window on your Softopper.

I wish we had it that easy. In our progam...not our campus, mind you, just our nursing program...they do not under any circumstances round anything up. Our grading scale is different also. 100-93 is an A, 92-85 is a B, 84-77 is a C, and 76.99999999999999 and below is an F. Also if you fail any class, you are out of the program, and can reapply in 1 year depending on if they have room or not. Don't get back in, or fail a second class, and it's bye-bye for good.

I don't understand why they just don't use a standard scale and say you need a C+ or better to pass the program. That's how most of our core course worked.

Yeah it's pretty ridiculous. All of my core stuff was normal 90+ was an A, 80-89 was a B, 70-79 was a C, 60-69 was a D, and 59 and below an F. My GPA would be a lot better using that scale, that's for sure. I'm around a 3.4 though, which isn't horrible considering.

I think thats the way it should be done honestly. We're talking about people's lives and their well being. The tougher grading scale for medical programs makes sense.

For most jobs past the first one your GPA probably isn't going to matter, but for that first job it can matter. Allot of the investment banks like the one I interviewed with last week won't look at you out of college without a 3.5 or better. Get some experience and it won't matter as much.

Yes and no. I definitely agree with needing a higher than average grade to be able to move on, but it definitely causes a negative impact to GPAs. Luckily, as Mike said, GPA doesn't matter as much as experience. I definitely agree that in the medical field knowledge is of vast importance, but tests are typically not indicative of knowledge beyond the specificity of the questions themselves. Practical application of that knowledge in a clinical setting, and being able to put the pieces of the puzzle together are far more important. I've worked with medical personnel who were straight A, 4.0 students, and I wouldn't trust them with my dog. I've also worked with straight C students that I'd trust my life or the lives of my loved ones with and have no reservations.

That's the nice thing about the medical field, your clinical hours count as work experience, and references do a lot of good for most hiring. The issue is when you apply for graduate level or higher programs and they have a GPA cutoff that someone with a liberal arts degree could easily get into, but someone that went through a course graded at a higher standard might not be able to get into.

I've got allot of time in as a patient, and I've never once asked the nurse or even the Dr. what their GPA was. Having a cut off like a 77/C+ or higher on a normal scale is fine by me. I'd rather not have someone who is average or less cutting on me. Though a normal grading scale should work for everyone. That's what we have used our whole lives. As far as I'm concerned getting a 92 is just as much of an A as a 93 is. Dave's GPA would probably be as good or better than mine if they used the traditional scale instead of creating their own.

This was my military medical file when I came back from Afghanistan. If they still printed records out, my VA file would be twice as thick. I'd much prefer to have a smarter Dr or nurse, but I think using a special scale to cheat someone out of a GPA they earned is stupid! A 77 is a 77 regardless of the scale, so just call it what it is slightly better than average C+ and the minimum passing score.
    fullsizeoutput_61dc.jpg

Edit: and a 77 means you'll probably be filling out my records at the VA... :anonymous:

Biggest thing I can tell you about medicine, is once you get through school, get ready to relearn everything during patient care
There are so limited textbook cases, just like Dave mentioned, that straight A student may never be able to adapt to what that patient is experiencing and presenting with because it isn't in the lines of what they learned
Where that C student was equipped during clinicals, learned from the people that know what they are doing, and read between the lines

I agree that the medical field should be Harder that some other programs, but not many
I think it comes down to personal motivation and purpose.
Too many people go to school for 2 years, 4 years, etc and just repeat the same level of knowledge for 10 years.
A lot of medics I help instruct, especially those coming back for CEU blow my mind

They brag about their 10+ years of experience and in reality they have 1 year of experience (the year they got out of school) repeated 9 times.

And surgery is straight up scary in most cases, I did several rotations and a lot of times they (surgical team) were on auto pilot talking about their vacation or kids or bitching about this and that (just like we do) and not paying attention.
    - I know that's not always the case, but a surprising amount of the time

We all know what happens with an engineer messes up, or a lawyer, or a chef. But when your medical professional messes up, it costs a life.

    Aye aye. Soap box over

Keep up the outstanding work ladies and gents. Enjoy the hell out of xmas break
Anyone traveling?? Have any epic plans? I'm just around KNoxville and probably working

I think the grade that I get on my RNA biology test today and my Molecular biology final tomorrow will tell me how competent of a provider I will be in the future :blahblah::boink:

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
It looks like auto pilot but they are paying attention. usually. There is a range for surgeons just like everyone else. Some are like construction workers cutting and hammering. Seriously. Others are like artists admiring every nerve or muscle.

When an engineer fails, bridge collapses, plane crashes, fire sprinkler fails during fire, medical implants get recalled, truck has a bearing start rumbling at only 33,000 miles, robots kill us all, or your green printer ink looks teal instead. Seems to be a wide range of impact for us.
