It's a combination of both axle and driver skill. It's hard to coach through text so I won't even try but the weak axle did not help your situation. OEM is much stronger. When you read "OEM spec" it's just a certain parameter they met that falls within the range Toyota says is ok. Something to equate it to that people are more familiar with: alignment. Ever get an alignment print out and see where it says something like " Ok camber range: -1.0 through +1.0"? That's a huge range but OEM spec says anywhere in there is fine. Put your alignment at +1° camber 6° caster and +.1° toe and see how hard it is not to crash into every car you pass. Haha

That Autozone axle is fine for 99.9999% of Tacoma owners who have no intentions of every offroading their trucks, let alone driving over rocks or through ditches big enough to high center on. You just happen to fall in that .0001% that need something stronger. Toyota makes stronger axles because if people in stock Tacomas are breaking axles driving down their gravel driveway, they go under as a company from reputation, lost sales and free parts replacements. People that buy parts from Autozone will always buy parts from Autozone because "this is what I expect from something that cost half as much. I'll just buy another one and still save money."

Already soaked then in penetrating oil and been beating on them for 30 min before I took the video.
I can only imagine the frustration of dealing with this on the trail.

 

That makes since. I always just assumed that "build to oem specs" meant the same strength. But you know what they say about assuming. Called cool springs toyota and they can get me a set of remanufactured for a lil under $400 and can have them in a week. I'll be putting the autozone axle in till I can get my hands on those.

 

I usually hit mine 2 or 3 times and they pop out

 

I didn't film it but found a way to get the stuck ones out easier. Used a rotary hammer in the hammer only mode. Used my grinder to cut a 5/8 masonry bit in half so it had a flat face. Put that on the stud, pulled the trigger, and out came the cone washer.
