It was completely unplanned. We went in to talk and just see what offers were there. Next thing I know they make a ridiculous offer on my Tacoma and then an even more ridiculous offer on a brand new 4 runner trdorp so I said ok.

Is 22RE in early 90s trucks a good engine?
Minimal maintenance to get 500k or more out of it?
    :spy:

I've only ever owned older 22R and 1GR engines in toyota trucks.

Which one is that? I had a 91 4Runner with the 3.0L V6. It was the worst vehicle I've ever owned. I loved it, but I hated it.

I looked it up for about 5 seconds.

22R was the carburated 4 cylinder.
22RE was fuel injected version 4 cylinder.
22RTE was a fuel injected turbo 4 cylinder that was only out a few years.

She wanted one last photo yesterday before we said goodbye to the Tacoma. The rtt and storage was already off at this point. Still has a ton to take off.

It’s about a 200-250k engine. The big Achilles heel of them is the plastic timing chain guide breaking and letting the chain wear through the front cover into the water pump. When that happens, water ends up in the oil and wipes out the bottom end. The way to tell if the guide is broken is by listening for a nasty rattle at startup/idle. Check the oil after a drive to see if there is water in it. Also most valve stem seals are pretty dried out/worn out at this point and will cause a fair amount of smoke at startup or extended idle.

RE is a pretty low maintenance engine. Just replace the PCV valve and get a metal timing chain guide. Keep an eye on the oil level because it will burn some, no matter how healthy it is
