This guy makes some good points. Toyota technician. Works at a dealership. Says he's only seen one failed transmission.

He said the full transmission swap pays 4.9 hours for a 2WD. and something like 5.9 for 4WD.

That's pretty stingy. But the whole dealership flat rate model is completely broken and dysfunctional.

also suggests that these problems are exacerbated by social media and fear mongering. He's like look, what do you think we do at a dealership? We fix recalls and TSBs. That's mostly what we do. That's the main job that we have. This is not new. The only thing that's new is everybody getting online and bitching about it.

The video won't embed. You'll have to click on the link to see what the Toyota tech guy says.

There are far more than just one, lol. They keep popping up in the other groups / pages. And sure TSBs for leaking seals or whistling control arms, leafs, but not failed engines and transmissions, that is not the norm and that is what everyone is bitching about, it is not characteristically Toyota.

They didn't pick "less than thousands" on accident. Dissecting the carefully chosen bullshitty phrase:

One thousand is singular. Two thousand is plural. So less than "thousands" means up to 1,999 as I read it. The goal was clearly to imply it was only a few hundred without actually saying "It might be up to 2,000."

Of all the trucks produced in that VIN range, which was early in the run, that's a fairly high failure rate as a percent.

There are probably many thousands. I think under 2K is utter bullshit. Ultimately, though, if your transmission is bad you’ll know within the powertrain warranty and it will get fixed. My main concern is the supply chain delays and a nagging curiosity of how in the ever living fuck did Toyota let this happen after the Tundra debacle? All that said, I’ll enjoy my truck until it lets me down and sort it out then. So far I’m nearing 1,000 miles and no issues.

Yeah, the BS phrasing made me chuckle. If you add up the VIN cutoff numbers for each VIN "group" you get something like 121k VIN numbers below the cutoff, which makes no sense. I don't know how VINs are assigned so it isn't really possible to figure out the failure rates from what we know.

Agreed. What this feels like, though, is something much worse than a nothing burger but something not nearly as bad as the Tundra situation. I realize that that isn’t saying much lol.

I think the publicity of this issue is hitting Toyota hard my money says an updated tsb with more details or a service campaign/recall is on its way

I agree. They cannot allow their reputation to go down the tubes. Many people will say it already has, but I don’t agree. They need to course correct pretty hard, though. In the meantime I’m loving my 465 pound feet of torque and the quiet cabin.

They are still the best but to expect thousands of owners to be wondering about breaking down daily is ridiculous. Especially on a vehicle marketed to “go anywhere”. The cats out of the bag and there gonna have to do something

They got a deep hole to dig out of. But once the new platform is ironed out it’ll be fine. This is why, though, I got the 8 year / 125K plan. I don’t want to even think about it and if I sell it, the next buyer won’t want to either.

If my truck arrives in the next couple of weeks, then the transmission croaks before Christmas, it will much more than a nothing burger. My truck was built 9/10.

I would like to see something pre-emptive vs reactionary from Toyota. I use my truck as a my daily driver to work, and I use it to tow a camping trailer, and I do not want a surprise transmission break-down happening to me and my family if its something that Toyota knows about and can take action to correct. I know nothing is guaranteed and machines fail, but if they know about something and choose to wait to take action... well, I'm not their beta tester. And before anyone quotes me and says "don't buy first model year trucks, blah, blah, blah..." but I bought a Toyota primarily because they are supposed to be more durable and reliable than their peers, and expected better from them vs GMC, Chevy or Ford. A gamble, yes, but I thought I had chosen the right manufacturer and paid more for a Toyota which has historically been better.

My truck is already paid off so I'm not going to go trade it in, and wouldn't know what to get otherwise anyway. I got the Yota because of the 6' bed, and already didn't like the Nissan I had before this - so I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping nothing leaves me stranded in some bad situation (the worst would be with the camping trailer attached a few hundred miles from home..., but even a break down going to work is inconvenient).

Maybe with more press, they will find a way to do some kind of inspection to pre-emptively find the transmissions that need attention vs this wait for it to break nonsense. I know that sounds like a recall, but if they know the VIN range and know what to look for, can't that be inspected vs waiting for the transmission to leave the owner stranded?

When reading the TSB it states automatic transmissions. There may be a separate TSB for manuals.
