Alright, I'm feeling better and Sarah and I are no more, so I could use a nice escape with killer people.

I need to swap out the CV Axles on my truck in order to pass inspection. I have the paperwork showing I failed due to them, think I'll be safe going to MOAB with expired tags and torn CV boots? ;-)

Anyone want to work with me on a swap while we're there?

Update - spur of the moment north Idaho trip. Lata!!

As far as driving on the axles as is, it really depends how long they've been that way. If there's still grease in them and the tear is pretty recent, sure. Drive away, knowing that you're leaking grease all over the place and it'll eventually all be gone, causing permanent damage to them. But if they've been open for a while, well, metal on metal friction with high stress environment... Not a good idea.

As far as driving with expired plates, well, you risk a ticket. That is completely up to you if its worth the risk or not.

As you planning on replacing the half shafts, or just the boots? If only the boots, any noise from them at full lock either direction? If so, you'll want to replace that axle.

As far as how difficult it is, if its anything at all like the first gens, its really quite simple. The short of it is.. remove wheel, remove dust cover, remove nut, remove 2 bolts on lower ball joint, push rotor/caliper/knuckle out of the way, pull axle. Then put it all back together. Only do one side at a time so things dont get unaligned in the front diff. I believe your sway bar is attached to the knuckle, so you'll have to disconnect that as well. Maybe some ABS wires as well if they're short. The FSM has you removing calipers, tie rods, and all that, but if its anything like the first gens, everything can just swing out of the way pretty easy.

If you want to take this on yourself, let me know and I'd be willing to help out if you want it.

It’s not the most organized trip. I’m picking my bro. in-law up in Richfield Friday afternoon. The plan is to camp out and come home on Sunday.
As of right now my bro. in-law friend is going with his X-Terra
