    hello

I'm purchasing a 17 Tacoma tomorrow. Trying to narrow down from trd sport and trd off road.
I don't do much off roading but I want to ability to do some light duty stuff. I run and bike in the mountains so I need to access places that a normal car wouldn't handle very well or would bottom out on uneven terrain.
Will the 4x2 meet my needs or do I spend the extra money for 4x4. Also does the 4x2 having locking differential??

Trd off road has e locker, both 4x2 and 4x4. I have a prerunner and take it offroad... it does plenty fine but i wont go out alone, always go out with a 4x4.

Dont really need a locker from the sounds of it, my vote is a 4x4 trd sport

If you do get a 4x2, then yeah get the locker. Just keep in mind a locker will only get you into places that are harder to recover from, if you do get stuck.

4x2 has locking differential, but price difference between 4x4 and 4x2 isn't large enough to justify not getting a 4x4.

I heavily suggest considering the 4x4, unless you are 100% sure you'll never use it. You see people saying "damn i got 4x2 and want to upgrade to a 4x4" quite often. You don't often see it the other way around.

If you are only looking at sport vs offroad go offroad. They are the same price. A locker is a lot better value than a non functional hood skewp and some extra painted parts.

Ill add another note, ive spent 10 grand on mods on my truck.. it still wont go where a stock 4x4 will go.

Don't know if your kidding or not but I got a TRD Pro Sport 4x4. Have taken it off road once. Where do you live? Do you get Snow? Do you camp, hunt, fish? If so you may want the off road. This winter wasn't the harshest but we only got one bad storm over 4". Loved every moment crushing snow. I'll Second what Aero said, You can get the 4X4 and drive only with 2 wd or 4 wd. If you get the 4x2 you can't ever go int 4 wd. Better to buy and never use then wish you had.

Don't get the prerunner, dont get a sport, go all in and get the off-road 4x4. Sport ride is terriable due to the suspension, for the same price make your self happy and get the off road. They should get rid of the Sport and just go with the SR, SR5, Off-Road, and Pro.

Resale on a 4x4 will be better IMO My experience with a posi rear end in a 2 wheel drive truck on snow covered hills was terrible. The rearend would just swing out to the side and was very hard to keep on the road.

I'd spend the money to get a 4X4 before I bought an 2X4 Offroad (which has the locker). You can get an SR or SR5 with 4X4 for about what you'd pay for a 2X4 Offroad.

It resales for more because you paid more upfront, but it depreciates just the same percentage as a 2wd. You basically spend a dollar to get back 50 cent when you sell it. On top of all the other added costs, higher financing, higher insurance, added up keep, lower mpg, more stuff to break, ect. Many people buy 4wd for the image, especially the ones that nark on 2wd like crazy, usually insecurity issues and most likely they don't really need it them selves. Like putting others down to pick them selves up...

IMO based on what the OP said the 2wd TRD will be just fine, that truck with a locker is plenty capable.

    Good luck OP!

I don't really think they depreciate at the same percentage. Used 4X4 trucks are ridiculous in price around here.

I have a pre-runner and I off road but if I could do it again I would get a 4x4 with a locker. Specially if you are in a region where it rains or snows.

The 4wd will definitely hold its value more. Someone who needs a truck but doesn't need 4x4 would buy a 4wd if the price is right. However someone who needs/wants a 4x4 will more than likely not settle with a 2wd no matter how good the price is. I experienced that first hand when buying and selling. Getting the 4wd will increase your potential customer base greatly.

Plus it will be a nice security blanket to have incase you need it off-road, move up north, etc..

I'll take a 4x4 open diff/brake LSD SR5 truck over a TRD-OR 2wd with e-locker any day of the week. You would be amazed how well the trac brake-LSD system works on the lower trim SR5 or TRD-sport 4x4 trucks.

4x2 will do what you're asking of it.

i bike and hike in the mountains. no rock crawling or mudding to get where I go, so it works for me. Only time I've gotten near nervous was driving down a long, dry wash that had about a foot deep of loosely packed very deep sand. and I'm pretty sure the truck was still fine and it was all in my head.

Locker is a nice bonus and helps occasionally going up loose packed hills, in moderate snow/ice, etc.

I own my trucks for 10 years. I buy a truck for what I may need it for in the future and not what I need it for now. There may be a really cool trail you want to hit up in mountains 4 years from now that you won't be able to get to because you bought a 4x2. Just saying, think about where you might be in the future and not necessarily what you need now.

    Get the 4x4
