I ended up ordering an OGT Expedition 3.0 so hopefully no issues

Pressing that red button to lock the hitch on is way more satisfying than it should be

You should be fine if buying new. There’s a special form that manufacturers should provide you when you purchase the trailer. Nobody had ever submitted that form for an AT Overland trailer in NY prior to me, and that’s where my issue came from.

7501 form for dmv? OGT has the driver hand deliver when trailer is delivered for registration

Yes. There’s an option there for the manufacturers certificate of origin. That’s ultimately what would have worked for me the quickest way. I don’t think you’ll have any issues at all it sounds like.

Anyone running an ikamper mini on their trailer? If so, any issues?

Kind of browsing through here; do most of you on here prefer having that smaller style camper setup rather than slamming it all on the truck. Do you do it for the ability to drop and run light? I have been mixed if I want the truck camper or just buy a trailer hookup and drop when heading out in the woods.

I don't like the idea of hauling a trailer since I like to run fast, light and able to move wherever, but always open to counter points.

I have the trailer for when it's myself and the wife, and the truck for when it's just myself OR if we want to bounce from spot to spot to spot without much of a stay. I've never felt the trailer limited me to move fast or anything.

Trailer works great when we know we will be staying in a spot for a few days but want to explore the area. Drop trailer, set up, lockup, go do things, come back to camp already set up and ready.
But we have also used the trailer for quick stops. Don't unhook, don't set up, just crawl in the back and rack out. When it's time to go theres literally nothing you need to do except get in the truck and leave.

Did you custom build the extendable support pillars for the RTT or did you purchase them?

Im in the same boat. Typically we put everything on the truck and fly out to our camp spot. Downside is with the RTT and annex we cant just jump in the truck and explore the local area ie, hike or drive down local trails. Hence my thoughts on building a trailer. But there is the trade off of hauling a trailer.

I think a lot will come down to what trailer you build. A simple RTT trailer can be left in place and locked up, but is still small, lightweight, and not much of a burden.

I like the gas strut idea, Id be concerned with them going out not too long after install. Theyd have to be beefy and long especially if youre trying to achieve that 6'-4".

Very true, Im thinking wed use it like you do. If we got the whole family wed take the trailer. Just me and the misses maybe only the truck. Definitely need locks.

Gas strut to assist with lift, but could use pins to lock the height in place taking load off the struts. Would help extend life. I also saw someone somewhere build a crack setup that was pretty simple but raised his RTT quite a bit.

I like the trailer because it is loaded and ready to go. Just have to fill the water and stock the fridge. It makes getting out on a Friday after work quick and easy. For solo trips I don't typically take the trailer and just pack a basic kitchen bin in the truck.

As a family of 4, the added space the trailer gives us is huge. Last year we went on a 3 week trip with the truck and trailer and were able to bring bikes and paddle boards, in addition to our regular camping needs. Having the trailer also means that we don't fill the bed of the truck up as much, giving us better access to the GFC.

As for being able to move wherever, I've never felt limited by my current trailer...it is built to go anywhere my truck can go and it tows really well behind the truck. It doesn't slow me down on pavement and off road the speed differential is minimal. Most of our camping is disbursed camping that involve traveling several miles of dirt roads. There have been a few instances where I had to back down dirt roads due to locked gates or impassable obstacles and it certainly would have been better/easier without the trailer but I've always been able to get turned around, even on some sketchy shelf roads.

If everyone is working when packing camp we can be rolling in 30 minutes but I usually do most of the packing while my wife prepares breakfast and the kids run around to burn off energy before they are stuck in the truck on travel days.

We generally try and stay places for 2 nights minimum to give us a day to relax or explore but there have been plenty of times that we were only stopped for one night before moving on to the next location. When exploring from camp by vehicle we leave the trailer behind.

We've always camped a lot and it's a rare year that we don't have at least 30 nights camping, even when we were just tent camping. We got into a trailer when I was going through cancer treatment and wanted a bathroom to puke in and a more comfortable bed for sleeping. Our first trailer was 23ft and 5,500lbs. It was great when we had babies and toddlers and when I was sick but I didn't like being limited to developed campgrounds and it wasn't built to be towed off road. We picked up a RTT to expose the kids to disbursed camping and soon we were only using the trailer once a year for a big family trip. I didn't like having to pack up the RTT if we wanted to use the truck so we ended up with an off-road trailer then replaced the RTT with a GFC a year later so the kids have their own sleeping space that is quick to pack up.

For family camping or establishing a base camp to explore from, you can't beat a trailer. A couple times a year I solo camp and I do enjoy running with just the truck and GFC but it helps that I can have the GFC closed up in under a minute so moving each day isn't a time consuming hassle.

That's for sharing. I'm about to have a family of 4 in a few months and iy has been something my wife and I have been taking about. Sounds like a solid setup to me.

Yeah I know that feeling. It's the trade off with both setups for sure. Some downside but both are great.
