I wouldn't recommend driving through a bunch of mud if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time. That gritty stuff can ruin bushings, bearings, any type of pivot point.

Any truck with decent tires will drive through a rock bed.

I had Michelin's got stuck on a flat surface in 4WD. Now I'm running hankook atm's and good to go. Growing up never had lockers so why would you need them now.

I've owned 2 non-TRDs and never had any problems. My 2002 was running Nitto Terra Grapplers and my '05 is currently wearing nearly slick mismatched crap from the P/O. As long as you stay within the limits of your equipment and abilities you shouldn't have any issues.

Which model? Michelin is a brand. They have many different types of tires.

    These?

I highly recommend the Toyo Open Country a/t ll. I have 90k miles on them and at 50 to 60% left. Zero complaints

    Ha ha!!

I purposely didn't buy a trd for two main reasons. 1) I hate stickers with a passion 2) I'm going to be changing out everything suspension related that I just paid extra for

The trd offroad has the locker and I'm a little jealous but that's it. I always recommend to buy a sr5 and then mod it to your style. I have added window tint, katzkin leather with heated seats, 5100 Bilsteins, new wheels, 285s, canvas tonneau cover and I've still spent less than a trd offroad. The relentless fabrication rock sliders I just ordered put me over. :stirthepot:

If I was to ever go back to a tacoma as my off road rig, I too would start with an sr5. You're starting off with a stronger rear end and the difference in cost from the trd should be able to get you an ARB in the rear. Also, Bilstein 6XXX or 7100's or something would be better than a stock trd.

A leather cover on a shitty seat is still a shitty seat. I found a huge difference in TRD seats vs. non-TRD seats. I agree on the suspension and mods, though stock parts for cameras, towing, heated seats etc is nice and clean instead of fucking around with eBay parts. I think TRD makes sense. Pro does not.

Only TRD off-road has the smaller rear diff. Sport comes with some nice comforts (seats) and has the big diff. Also... what do you guys with the sr5 and off-road models use to sacrifice 3% of your aerodynamics if you don't have an ineffective hood skewp?

I bought my SR5 intending to keep it mostly stock. Did leaf packs for my trailer. Rims that are 8" wide rather than the 7" wide steel oem wheels it came with. Cut an inch and a half off the front mud flaps. Those are my mods. Still running the crappy oem Dunlop rubber. I've 4-wheeled the crap out of it. Colorado style, very little mud, lots of steep rutty rubble, sometimes beach sand, the occasional shallow-ish stream crossing.

I don't do the big crazy stuff where you need a winch and what-all. I'm sure I'd need to mod it for that and would probably want the locker, but that HD stuff isn't my bag. During hunting season I got tired of bouncing that thing all over the countryside. It was about the access to backcountry not the activity of 4-wheeling.

I've had 4 different Toyota 4 wheel drives. T100, Tundra, 89 Hilux and now this Taco. Never had a locker. I've taken wrong lines where a wheel started to slip. Back up a little modify the line, try again. Can't remember last time that even happened. Must have gotten better at picking lines during the last 20 years.
