Big Bear. Plenty of fun trails up there. Just broke in my cousins new stock 4runner up White Mountain this saturday. Probably not the best place for someone new, but with a good spotter you'd be fine.
The Gold mine self driving tour is pretty neat. And theres some other fun roads out there

Like @dtaco06 said, check out the Wheelers Anonymous thread in the SoCal regional forum (there's a link to it in my sig), we're always planning little and big runs. Rowher Flats, Gorman, Miller Jeep Trail, Drinkwater Flats, Cleghorn, Pilot Rock, Azusa, tons up in Big Bear, all within 30 min - hour and a half from LA.

Montecito Heights and Omaha Heights will give you some good practice in the city lol. There are some roads in those neighborhoods that make a lot of offroad trails look easy lol. Just kidding, but they do get really steep and turn-y.

Cleghorn is a good beginner spot - right off the 15 not far from LA.
Address: Cleghorn Rd, San Bernardino, CA 92407

    For do's and don'ts:

Watch all of this guy's videos and you'll learn a lot.

Cleghorn is a good beginner spot but there are some off-shoots that are really tricky, ones I wouldn't attempt without sliders and a lift at least. The main fire road going through it is 2wd friendly but the off-shoots are where the fun is at, just have to be careful which ones you pick. Scouting ahead is your friend.

Rowher is a good beginner spot as well, the main Rowher 4x4 trail can be done in a stock 4x4 I think. Always a good idea to go with another vehicle.

Some good places mentioned here, learned a few new ones too.

OP, I'm in your same neighborhood if you ever want to join me on a trail run.
