I've seen a couple of videos in which bloggers say with enough offset you can rock 285/75r16 in a stock tacoma third gen. Is this true? And if so, what's the minimum offset I would need for it, i don't love it when the tire sticks out the fender in an excessive amount.

Im new to the forum (though I have stalked around for years now)

This tire size is a first for me. A quick search only shows 1 brand that carries it - Nitto Trail Grappler But yeah, I dont know the answer to your question

    Welcome!

I'd say your best bet is going to be a chop and trim, but if you really don't want to do that you'll need to find a good alignment shop to push the wheel forward with high positive caster and wheels with at least a -12 offset. You may be able to get them to fit, but you won't be able to get them not to rub at full lock/stuff or reversing more than likely with just an offset!

Do you need that size tire to make you successful where you drive?

    Most people don't.

It's basically riding on clay, I don't want to say mudding to misunderstand the idea with what coal runners do. I most likely can pull it off with 31", but I like the height 33" bring to the game. I would also put a leveling kit, I just just want to throw away my OR stock bilstein as I don't feel its necessary to buy a pair of shocks having these which work well enough.

Have you looked into 255/85/16 tires. Gets you the 33 and “most” of the time there is no rubbing or if there is its on the mud flaps. Here is a great thread by @LadyRed. Maybe these will be a better size for you or at least something to look into. Good luck and welcome to TW.

I don't think it's possible. I can tell you right now -12 will rub without chopping anything. I've chopped and I rub in places. And I'm lifted 2.2-5"~

I have seen some folks run 285s on a 0 offset wheel, and not have to do the cab mount chop.

A few folks have said the Pro wheels will work but someone else says they rub. We’ve seen a couple YouTube’s posted about no rubbing, only for them to come back and say they actually do. I’d take their advice with a grain of salt.

    Expect to CMC

My buddy Justin has a Pro and he put 285s on with no rubbing. Even off road.

Run 33" with no lift/rub/cutting with OE wheels (or wheels with OE specs)

    Like @Devir7 says..........

The Cavalry blue Taco is bone stock, except for 285 KO2s. It was a fairly easy ride, but still no rubbing off road. Not sure what the wheel specs are on the Pro wheels.

Joe, I am in Colorado Springs. Maybe we can meet up sometime and you can explain to me how I can have 285/70/R17’s with a 2-3 inch lift (dealer told me 3 but seems the specs at Toytec show 2) and not rub. I also have the adjustable SPC UCA’s which I have been told is the magic component but I don’t know. I would really like to understand my suspension better and why I don’t rub so I can help others!!

Sounds like a plan. My guess is you bought the Larry Miller special, ;) Typically the rub comes from cycling the suspension through full compression while turning which only ever occurs while off-roading on tough trails.

You may be 100% or you may be 90% but never touch the 10% that would cause you to rub.

I hate to be that guy but that’s basically a dirt road. I wouldn’t expect much rubbing on a dirt road.

Now I’m running 35s and in normal use and easy trails I don’t rub either but as soon as I’m on a dedicated trail there will be an obstacle or unique situation that will cause some mild rubbing. This is often similar to folks with 285s as well.

Makes sense, I have run Slaughterhouse, China Wall, Tin Cup, and the Moderate parts up by Eagle Rock/Mt Baldy and have not rubbed, that I know of anyhow. I probably won’t do anything harder than those in it. Thanks for the reply.
