^Better avoid Toyota engines with timing chains then. There are Lexus cars with the 2GR made in Japan leaking left, right, and center. The 4.6L in the Tundra and GX460 have timing cover leaks too. Luck of the draw.

OP - I had the same issue after my timing cover was resealed (not sure if related)

Yota fixed it, the seal on the valve cover and some o-rings on some stuff that plugs into were replaced and it solved the issue.

Exact same collection point and landed right where you’re describing - I was under the hood and was like “why is my dusty exhaust looking wet?!?” - eeeesh.

I believe the valve cover uses the red liquid seal.

Hope this helps - good luck!

After breaking a tab off my oil filter housing (unbeknownst to me at the time) during an oil change, cranking to check for leaks when finished, and having oil spray everywhere through the hole in the filter housing, I don't know whats a leak and whats leftover oil bathed at this point. Pretty sure mines had the common timing cover leak for years now; it doesn't actually leak enough to be noticed, and warranty ended a long long time ago, so I've never tried to address it. I'd love to say leaks aren't common in "new" vehicles, but 2016-17s were definitely known for these types of things.

Well the dealership said it was leaking from the valve cover gasket , looks like it was a faulty gasket when they did the timing chain cover job . I’ll keep an eye on it and cross my fingers that’s all it was .

old trucks leaked too. But with 3k mile oil changes it never had a chance to make a dent in the oil level.

I remember back in the day needing a quart on every fill up.
Most of us just bought a case of Quaker State 10w40 and kept it in the trunk.

Yea but why dont you say how simple were they compared to trucks now days? When I got my first car, 03 4runner with rusty chassis and oil filter literally glued on.. all I needed was a 20$ screwdriver pack with bits and lego flathead screwdriver to take apart both interior & exterior. This is for someone who got his first ever car, I can only imagine how easy old cars were to work on for mechanics.

wait, did the truck ever stop running?

'reliable' and 'never leak fluids' are two entirely different and non-exclusive categories.

while they were easier to work on the leak and failure points were the same. (getting to them is a hassle)
