I always buy two pairs @ once. That way I alternate. Also one pair is for asphalt/grass at a park, NEVER concrete (well hardly ever, U know the score) and one for trail running.

It may be overkill, but running helps me to release work related stress, so I can't loose running time.

Here is my .02. When I first returned to running every time I was done it felt like my shins were breaking, pain and a lot of it. I was shown a stretch and I'll explain it the best I can.
Take off your shoes, you either need to be in socks or barefoot. From a standing position put which ever leg you want to start with backwards until you can put the top of your foot/ toes on the floor. Put weight/ push down on the top of your foot toes on the leg you have extended behind you until you feel a pull/ stretch in your shin. Repeat with other leg.
This stretch did wonders for me and I don't get shin splints any more. I also continued to run through the pain. I can't recommend that though because you could actually have fractured or caused hairline fractures to your Tibia. If the stretch explanation isn't good let me know and I'll try to explain better.

i had the same problem when i was going through rookie school with the fire dept. i was using those reebok reflex shoes and decided to switch to some old junky worn in shoes and that helped a lot. take some ibuprofen before you run and wear long socks to keep heat in. welcome to the brotherhood!
