I prefer a "permanent temporary". I hate shit just thrown together. You can do a very nice, concealed, and efficient permanent install and still remove the antenna and all exposed interior components as needed.

For example, my hood mount antenna unthreads and I cover the mount with a cap most of the time. My mic unplugs and once removed, the only evidence of a CB is the mic clip on the console. Putting antenna and mic back on takes about 3 seconds, and I leave them both under the back seat to have ready whenever I want. Having a permanent antenna is cheaper, more efficient, and makes SWR a "set once and done" proposition. A full size mobile CB is also cheaper and generally easier to use than a all in one style, as well.

I swear I have a good setup. A loose wire in a mic extension component caused my issue yesterday. That's since been fixed.

Here's my actual setup that shows all the components.

There are also a TON of folding antenna mounts...you could probably tuck a nice 3 or 4'-er up behind one of your roof rack bars if you have a rack...or hinge one over on your front grille guard, ect if you have one of those. Maybe even between the cab and bed if a mount is made.

They are also good in road trips as truckers will clue you in to police, wrecks and detours. You just have to listen to all the jabber, which can be entertaining or annoying.
The radio is 4 watts, all CB's by law are 4 watts. Its the antenna and its location that give you better range. A lil wil by wilson is a great mag mount. Even the best set is limited by a few miles and is dependent on terrain. You can up the wattage which gets you out a little farther. But for group rides that is all you need. Just make sure you tune your antenna. I got my HAM license and talk with friends across town on simplex and 75-100 miles away on a repeater. And it is a lot better audio than CB.

Not a bad idea. I did finally find some t-nuts that fit into the bed tracks. Making a mount to fit those would be easy.

that sounds like the best deal for me. I hate making permanent mods to the truck. I prefer to be able to remove any changes and get it back to stock if I ever upgrade.

The bed rails aren't grounded so you would need to run a separate ground to the antenna or you'll never get your swr right.

Ah the Littlite? I actually have one in my garage that I took out of my Taco, for sale. .... I got the one in my 4R used, off Ebay. It's a side mount, the other one I have from the Taco is a top mount.

    BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!
I already had my antenna at the house when we were riding but I didn't have a cb or cable. I since have those on order so we are set, I am actually doing a permanent addition to my truck so I can be all redneck and stuff. I have used cb before but it was on my car and I used it for long road trips, way more effective than any radar detector I ever used in early police detection and great for avoiding big accidents or traffic back ups, and also entertainment talking to random truckers. I had the wilson lil will and it was awesome, paired with a cheapo uniden, I'm getting a little nicer radio this time around, I'll let it be a surprise.

Another note, anyone washed their truck yet? I'm getting some great looks around town, LOL, more people checked out my truck today than have checked it out in the last year.

Hey Adam, you got a line on a (cheap) FJ Cruiser shift knob (for AT)? I want to replace the 4R knob with one of those. I can Google it but I'm not on the FJ forums to see if a guy is giving away or selling one in some random thread somewhere.

I hit a place on the way in at 19 degrees out. I had a bit of mud in my wheel giving me the wobblies coming home. I'm surprised how much I got off in 4 minutes lol. Still a lot of ice on it and it's been in the garage all day. Supposed to warm up by the weekend tho!

I don't know of any but I know a lotta folks have them just sitting around after going billet. I had done that but decided I liked the stockers best and ditched the billet. I could get you a set from the FJ forum if you don't have a login there already.

Oh I see you said NOT on it lol. I'll post up and see. They just give them away a lot of the time.

Edit- do you prefer all black or the silver top? Most have silver I think since black was base model.

Understand that, my ride home was snowing the whole way and too cold for me to wash the truck if its just going to freeze up, waiting for it to warm up for a day and ill wash it at a power wash spot.
My ride home was not nearly as enjoyable as the ride down because it was snowing and dark on the lonely 62 and 241, I didn't get to take in the scenery, actually seen a few Amish buggies out in it as well and they got some pretty sweet bright lights on those things!

Most of all this trip inspired me to get out and just explore some of those old county roads and township roads.

It's been said before on this thread many pages back but where can I get a paper map of those roads? @MeefZah? Is that possible for all counties?

Yeah, silver would be sweet. I just need the shifter knob because the transfer case lever knob is the same and I already have that, obviously. Thanks. I'm willing to buy it I just don't want to drop $50 on it.
