Headed to Discount Tire this morning to get my new tires put on meaning I can finally take my truck down off the blocks. I'm going to scout and do some recon around Tar Hollow in the next few days to see if that would work for a light-wheelin meetup.

@WheelInTheSky It sounded like you might of been when you said something about discount tire and tar hollow. I used to work at the one in Lancaster years ago. I'll try to swing out that way maybe this weekend to check things out. @outdoorwhore if you find anywhere in the area definitely let us know. Seems like there's enough people wanting to get together in Ohio. I'd still be down for heading up north and checking out Southington too.

Remember Southington is only open to the public the first weekend of every month. I'd like to check it out some time too, but late May/early June I'll be out in Moab:thumbsup:

North of Cincinnati, here. Just got back from a trip to the Smoky Mountains National Park, and found some great unpaved 'wilderness' roads. Traveled abut 40 miles of them over three passes on the east-northeast side of the park north of Cataloochee campsite. Truck performed beautifully, should have let some air out, it was a bit bouncy so I had to watch my speed. I know we won't have anything like that here, maybe in SE Ohio Hocking Hills or Lancaster as OP's have said already.

I have been to Tar Hollow once with my son's boy scout troop about 10 years ago. We did a backpack overnight to Wildcat Holler IIRC. 18 degrees F! And I do mean F! it was cold... 2 hours or so to Tar Hollow for me.

I web-found Happy Hollow Dirt Park, I've been there. It's near Hillsboro on SR41. Not sure it's suitable for full sized trucks.

So I took the trip down to Tar Hollow yesterday (little over an hour for me) and did some exploring/getting lost in the surrounding areas. Tar Hollow is at the intersection of Ross, Hocking, and Vinton County. A little North and East of the hollow is the infamous Hocking Hills as well as Zaleski, which is a great forest area. Driving through these forests really made me want to take advantage of the hunting and fishing they offer! But back to the point, here's how my recon mission went:

I drove around on windy country roads for over an hour gazing at all the scenery and wondering if I'd ever find an unpaved road. Even asked at the park office where to find them and they said I'd only find gravel no dirt. So, continued exploring. Eventually when i was quite low on gas I stumbled onto an unpaved road...

it went on for a couple miles. Then, it joined onto a small paved road and I thought my fun was over, only to realize that I was stuck in a labyrinth of windy gravel roads! I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more if I'd not been so low on gas, but I made it out of there eventually so no complaints.

The funny thing is that I went down by Tar Hollow trying to find some of the trails and roads I had seen pictures and videos of people trying to wheel on different offroad forums, but I failed to find any of them. These gravels roads were fun though, and in the middle of a beautiful forest. I would say that the fun was well worth the drive, I certainly enjoyed myself. A lot of elevation change and windy, sometimes sharp, turns but I managed to run the roads in 2WD. Granted, I was drifting around just about every turn but i only slid off the road once, so it wasn't too treacherous.

Dunno if this sounds like the kind of trip you guys want to make, do we want a little more hardcore terrain?..
Although all I found was gravel roads if we did some more searching we might come across the dirt/mud that I've seen pics/vids of from other forums' trips.

If this looks good to you guys there are an F-load of spots to camp as well as a conveniently located bar;)
If there are any other spots around central ohio you guys want to know more about let me know and I'll try to do some recon on my next day off!

Its a great area over there. I'd like to find something a little more challenging. I'll swing out there this weekend if I get a chance. I don't live far at all from it. I've camped around the area a few times and do some hiking at Zaleski. I need to try out some fishing there too
