Not sure about 1st gen, you definitely want something solid though.

I'm thinking I'd be best off drilling into the hood, as anything mounted between hood and fender is liable to get crushed/ripped off (It's what i do.) This shit gets pricey fast, I'll have to have a serious think about money and decide if/what I'm ordering.

I'm guessing I should get a spring for the antenna above all else..

That is why mag mounts are good bang for the buck. Cable included, movable, and if it gets hit it just comes off.

Mine is nice. I haven't been happier with it, but a good mount would make it more EAF. Picked up the mag mount at a truck stop on my way to RT last year. Lol

Budget minded? Lil wil $40.00 includes cable, no mount or bracket needed, just hook it up and stick it on. Check with a swr meter. Make adjustments as needed and you're in there like swimwear.

I'm trying to convince myself that mounting 4ft of fiberglass on my hood wouldn't look ridiculous..

For quick and easy / temporary I'd use either a Wilson Lil Wil mag, or a K40 "30" mag.

I prefer things done "permanently" so I use a trunk lip mount base clipped on the edge of the hood and a 53" base loaded antenna. My antenna is just a steel whip so it flexes very well. This combo makes more sense than a fiberglass antenna and a traditional hood mount. The fiberglass antenna won't flex much and the traditional hood mount is basically an "L" bracket that you drill into the inner fender. This NMO style is easier to use, looks better, is more trail worthy, and has better output. It's also right around the same price - the entire setup is under $60. If you aren't familiar, the NMO trunk lip bracket slides over the edge of the trunk (or hood) and then is tightened into the underside of the trunk lid using 2 small set screws. These secure it and also provide the ground to the antenna.

Ebay seller antenna-2-way direct has some high quality yet inexpensive stuff, I have used them on several installs.

And, I actually have an extra NMO trunk lip mount lying around so if you want it, you can have it and just buy the 53" antenna, then you'd be in for a whopping $29. But - the NMO mount I can give you has a shorter than normal cable - I cut it down to about 6 feet, though it still has the PL259 connector on it, so it's ready to go. You also need to get a thin piece of rubber like a cut off a chunk of a bicycle inner tube to go between the mount and the top of the hood to prevent scratches, if you care. The piece that is glued in from the factory fell out forever ago.

Edit, never mind, you were busting my balls about the stickers and Brian reports you still haven't ordered one, so fuck you, I'll just keep this mount.

So you could basically mate that to a cheaper radio (can't remember all the names you guys talked about a week or 2 ago for less than $100) and you'd be good to go?

Funny you post this just as I'm looking into steel whips and realizing I could buy a 102" and just tie it down:D

I'd absolutely take you up on the mount if you're serious, I need me a CB so I can tell you how I really feel out on the trail.

I think I'll order a whip and CB tomorrow morning.

Yes. The radio is almost irrelevant. The antenna, mount, location, and SWR adjustment are what gives the radio it's ability to transmit.

All radios are max 4 watts of transmit power (legally, as you would buy it - you can have them peaked for more power but it's illegal and really not worth doing IMO). So the top of the line $300 President radio is technically as effective as the $40 Uniden 510XL. You obviously get more bells and whistles with a higher priced radio but all I give a shit about is ability to talk and hear, I don't care about other knobs.

Oooo you better re-read my post. I edited it because you are a fuck.

Buy a sticker and play nice and you can have the mount.

As I understand it, some have the SWR adjustment built in and some don't (hence why you have to have them tested?) and then cut the antenna to the correct length?

Yeah, I was planning on going with the Uniden regardless of what antenna and mount I chose. It just seems to be a decent entry level without problems or frills.

I'll take you up on your mount/cable offer and by a radio and antenna. Perhaps you could bring the SWR to RRG so we could tune my set-up?:fingerscrossed:

Haha, fair enough. I'll buy a sticker if that's what it takes, but you have to find someone for me to give it to.

I've never been a sticker person.

It's a TW Ohio sticker, I fucking designed it for our little group, you cocksucker. And, on top of that, you are fixing to go on some faggy cross country tour- wouldn't it be nice to represent this thread while you are out giving some cowboy a blowjob in Wyoming?

Some radios have a rudimentary SWR meter built in but it is worthless. Worthless like Gavin's testicles, they hang there but they won't ever be used to procreate with a woman. The antenna length is what is adjusted for best SWR, and to do that you really need a stand alone SWR meter.
