Ughhhh alright I'll put the lotion in the basket...

I have no desire to be affiliated with internets or Ohio, I'd much rather just have a sticker with all your ugly faces on it that I could plaster on my back windows. But, it seems this will have to suffice.

Bring a stupid sticker to RRG and I'll pay you for it.

Ok, so will this have enough power to talk over a few mile radius (highway use) when dialed in correctly? Edit: I'm talking about a uniden 510 with a simple antenna like you're explaining.

(Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this.... Never even used one)

Nope, never mind. I take back what I said about the sticker.

Yes. Range is very subjective and varies greatly but you should expect at least a couple of miles on the freeway. I think our little Danville group was probably spread out over a mile, mile point five; and I had no trouble hearing Greg all the way on the back, this with hilly terrain and inclement weather.

If you buy the antenna to use with this mount I have MAKE SURE YOU BUY AN NMO STYLE BASE. The antenna I linked in the Ebay auction will work fine. Do not buy a standard "CB" style base, I can't recall the dimensions, but thye don't even come close to interchanging.

NMO (Motorola style) is the standard that HAM and professional radios use and is very common, but it is uncommon for CB use.

Thanks for the input. I'm hoping to catch one of the trips soon and it would be nice to have a CB on board!

Copy that. I'll buy a base and whip in the morning as well as the radio. I think 6ft of cable should be enough, I don't have to run it very far.

Does that NMO style bend well?? And what type of length are we talking on an antenna/whip? The longer, the better? I was thinking 6' at the very most

NMO is the style of antenna base /mount. It has nothing to do with the flexibility of the antenna. Length is conditional on the wavelength of the radio wave, which is itself dependent on the frequency. An antenna isn't just a random hunk of wire, it is carefully engineered to be of a certain length for a certain reason. Longer is not better unless longer also means the antenna is more carefully matched to the wavelength. Example : a quarter wave antenna is 1/4 of a wavelength. A longer 1/2 wave antenna is 1/2 of a wavelength. The 1/2 wave will be more efficient than the 1/4 wave. However, just taking a piece of wire and cutting it so it is longer than a 1/4 wave but shorter than a 1/2 wave would actually result in terrible radio transmissions and probably radio damage.

Probably you should Google this shit.

Mark, how much abuse has your antenna gone through thus far? I'd like to be able to smash through brush like Willscreek without a care in the world.

What part of wills creek are you talking about? Are they the really muddy ones that are considered the "belt line"? I've been through there before on my Rhino and it's become a muddy mess in some places, not to mention most of the trails are illegal. The game warden has been known to be a stickler around there (I'm less than 5 miles from there)....... Unless you're talking about a different group of trails.

I mean it whacks branches a lot. The antenna is extremely flexible. You obviously don't want to smash the base load on stuff because that isn't flexible. ..but the base unscrews by hand and you can reach it from inside if you encounter a really poorly placed branch, you just reach out and unscrew it.

Here's another good antenna picture. As long as you are hitting the antenna maybe 2+" above the base load, it'll spring right back. The base load and mount are pretty tough and will handle branches ok, but something solid will break them.

That is a nice setup Mark. I'm sure it performs better than most shorter antennas. Just wanted to put out there that it will hit anytime you go through a drive through. Ask me how I know. That's why I run a shorter antenna around town and can switch to a longer one if I feel I need better performance.

If any here wants a spare upper ball joint for their stock control arms. I've got one I can give away. Not really something that will be of use..

Well Mark, you've swayed me. Parts ordered. Looking forward to their arrival.

In other news, I made an intelligent decision this morning and opted not to use my home made drill/cutter/whatever because I knew deep down that it would be a wobbly mess (drill bit was a bolt I had dremeled down to an asymmetrical square.) So, I made an investment in my future and bought an angle grinder. HOLY SHIT are they a blast or what?! I don't know how I survived without one of these. I am God now.
