Decided on the Mastercrafts. That way I can return them if I dislike them

What size are you looking at? Sounds like the MXTs fit your use better.

    EDIT: there you go!

the last 4 sets of tires i've had in order of quality (IMO) balanced between on-road and offroadability/snow traction:

    1. goodyear duratrac (so far, so good. haven't had it in anything too crazy offroad, nor in any snow)
    2. yokohama geolandar at-s (most underrated all terrain tire - so good in every condition)
    3. goodyear all-terrain adventure (P metric - smooth and quiet, not good in the snow or wet)
    4. goodyear SRA (horrible)

Personally I think Colorado is better than Moab; but they are pretty close together so I guess you could do both on one trip.

Having a nice, stock truck really limits you in Moab because ground clearance and lack of giving a shit about tearing stuff up are the two limiting factors out there. From my impressions, Moab is more a heavily modded truck playground; western Colorado is better for stock or lightly modded trucks. I was genuinely surprised how difficult even "easy" rated trails at Moab were and there is a lot of discrepancies between different guide books - some rate a trail as easy while others rate the same trail as "will rip off metal / highly technical" so it's hard to visualize what you are getting into - so if you have a truck that can just do it all, it's no problem. If you have a stock truck you may suddenly find yourself in over your head even if you research the routes in advance and think you are sticking to "easy" stuff.

After driving some of the stuff in both locations, the next time I go out there, I am renting a Jeep and raping the shit out of it instead of beating up the only 4 wheeled vehicle I own.

Re: tires, laugh it up fuckers, but I really like my Destination AT, very good tire for the kind of driving I do. So far I haven't really found anything it's bad at. Cheap, too.

Re: Danville, I may be out for this Tuesday, I am on deck for an ambulance shift and forgot I told the guy I'd cover if he needs me to. Should know in a day or so.

Love the conversations / tips. I do believe I have the wifey convinced we need to take a summer trip through CO. Gonna shoot for July 4th ish. I've heard the fireworks for Silverton are cool. The SW Colorado area is so awesome. Group trip?

This should be good for doing some passes and exploring some towns / mines.

x2 on the Geolandars. I was continuously amazed. Was at Uwharrie once with them and there was a long muddy climb. Everyone else had MTs so they sent me up first and it was surprisingly effortless. Always felt better than other tires too...had better feel on rocks and such...I could really tell where the truck was. They also seemed really square which I think helped gain traction with the edge lugs. Good AT

Yuppers. They're quieter now too and I don't have the thumping noise that I had with the old tires
