Does Toyota use full synthestic in the 3rd gen? Are they supposed to use full synthetic for their included oil changes?

I think 0w20 only comes in synthetic. So they better be using it.

I believe it also comes as a synthetic blend.. I definitely could be wrong though.

Toyota will tell you there is no need to change it before 10,000 miles. That said, many of us wanted to take precautionary measures and get it changed earlier. I paid them extra to change it at the 5,000 mile service.

I change mine at every 5k. The fact is that contaminants build up regardless. I'm just picky and want the least amount of wait time for deposit build up to keep the engine going as long as I can.

To go the 10K it's gotta be the full synthetic. I know some people that do change every 5K regardless. With the Toyota care you get 2 oil changes 10 and 20K intervals included and if you press it a third before you hit the magic mile mark.

If you google the plan it outlines what is done at the service intervals. It's basic maintenance nothing like BMW does where everything is included. So don't over analyze it like you won the lottery and got one over on Toyota. They will rub a penny 10 times before letting go!

The plan is set up to get the vehicle maintenance done! I know many people that never do a thing and then sit back and complain when shit breaks!

Take advantage of the service. Use an Indy to do the 5K oil changes if you feel you need it. Much cheaper too.

I did mine at 1100km (683mi). There is going to be the highest amount of crap in your filter between break in and your first oil and filter change. If it is flushed properly this is minimized. I talked about this to my motorcycle mechanic buddy (people drive or ship stuff 6-10 hrs just for him to work on it vs local) who is one of the best in the country. He did the same on his new truck and his gf’s car. Actually he does as I do and changes his oil twice as often as the new intervals. As he says oil and filters are cheap. Motors are not. I explained how many on TW are using oil testing services to test the oil. He laughed and said ok if there are no issues then great. But what happens with longer intervals when you have an issue? It goes that much longer before someone catches it.

To each their own. I do it at 8000km or 5000mi. I live in Canada and follow the severe service intervals. If I ever have a major warrantee issue my service records will show the truck was well cared for. At the same time I will have a ton of paperwork to justify whatever price I demand if the day comes I want to sell it. People always want the best maintained vehicle and mine is it.

I do it every 5,000 miles oil and filter. This truck will be mine until it drops dead. no trade-ins, or sales, either I go or it goes. If I get 15 years out of this thing I'M done anyways if I don't then I will drive my better car.

I’ve got 3000 miles on mine. I check the dipstick every week and notice break in metal flakes in the oil. I don’t think I’m gonna leave the metal in the oil for 7000 more miles.

Very few " Synthetics " sold in the U.S. are actually 100% synthetic . Dealers typically use the cheapest bulk oil that meets the vehicles specifications.

Some "synthetic" oil is made from Group III base stock " Dino", some from Group IV. Some from a blend of the two. Mobil sued Castrol and Castrol prevailed in showing that their Group III base stock oil was changed enough that it qualified as full synthetic. Since then API has removed all references to Synthetic in their documentation regarding standards. "Full synthetic" is a marketing term and is not a measurable quality.

    Group IV: PAO[edit]

Poly-alpha-olefin (or poly-α-olefin, abbreviated as PAO) is a polymer made by polymerizing an alpha-olefin. They are designated at API Group IV and are a 100% synthetic chemical compound. It is a specific type of olefin (organic) that is used as a base stock in the production of some synthetic lubricants.

Seems like a scam to me.

The motor has been around a couple years now. They have received numerous samples just based on what we read on TW. If they keep asking you to send in more samples and extend the intervals to less than OEM intervals with no reason to why they feel you need to continue to change before those OEM recommendations I am sceptical.

I change my oil at 8000km / 5000mi. I do it based on my own reasons. But if I am paying you for the data then I want a scientific reasons for why my oil fails the OEM interval. Everything I read is your oil is fine and could go X miles more. Doesn’t matter how many miles anyone has they always say go longer. So if they say go to 7000mi as they did with @shakerhood my question is what did they see that made them limit their recommendation to less than 10k which the factory recommends?

IMO if I don’t see anything out of the ordinary and there is no history of issues with that motor then why so conservative? After a certain number of samples you should be able to say X motor with X mileage and X conditions (winter, desert, off road, commuter) should typically have certain contamination and certain life expectancy of the oil and its additive package. Based on that I can’t see why they aren’t able to say 10,000mi is fine right off the hop. Or on the flip side say this motor should have its oil changed every X miles as a rule.

Yup! Did mine at 5K and will probably stay on that schedule and this is based upon my time as a major oil company sales rep. EVERYTHING about the new oils has changed over the years and oil has indeed improved, but that thing about "old dogs and new tricks" still resonates within me. $50.00 every six months ain't gonna kill me and I sleep better.
