Some people just like to change their oil way before necessary and throw money down the drain. If it makes them feel better.. oh well.

I don't put a lot of miles on my truck, so I change out every 6 months or so. I guess I could go to the prescribed mileage but the little extra cost doesn't bother me much and since I have it done at the dealership, any open notices/updates can be taken care of. I worry about contamination due to a lot of dust etc from the many road construction projects that seem to be never ending.

I'm sure all of the major brands are all very good oil especially if you change oil regularly between 3000 and 5000 miles but I've read that most "synthetic" oils are really group 3 oils not true group 4 "100 % synthetic base oils"

A group 3 oil is a conventional oil "group 2" that has been processed with so many additives that it performs much like a synthetic but it's not really a synthetic. That's why "full synthetics" are priced lower than a true 100% synthetic like Amsoil. Ever since the 1997 court ruling about synthetics, companies can claim their class 3 oil as " Full Synthetic" even though the base oil is derived from conventional crude oil.

Sadly the term "synthetic" has no legal meaning similar to "all natural" which makes it very difficult for the end consumer to discern between the various oil options available.

What do you find inaccurate? You bolded my comments regarding what I read time after time from people who send their samples to Blackstone. Are you arguing that I didn’t read this over and over or are you arguing what people claim Blackstone said? Or is your point more cryptic and I have missed it?

It is hard to refute a contrary opinion or even agree with it when all you claim is misinformation and stop before you actually say anything.

Toyota makes a lot of money off keeping resale high and that means keeping reputation good. Ask yourselves, why would they recommend an interval that was too high? You would see engine failures which would dilute the brand and push down values.

I'll change my oil standard intervals, and some guys can do them every 5k. In 20 years We'll both have trucks with 250k miles on the clock but i will have saved a bundle on costs

Short answer. Yes, pretty much all new mid to high grade engines use synthetic.

You should put synthetic in these trucks. Period. It is a Lexus engine with VERY tight tolerances. You can NOT go to regular or blend because it does not react the same on a molecular level with the pores of the metal in the piston. Synthetic is cheap if you buy a six pack on Amazon. $30.

Many companies make the 0w-20 full syn. Don’t think about it, go syn.

In addition, my Toyota Care decal states first complimentary oil change is at 5000 miles or 6 months.
