When I was a young stupid kid, I thought Subarus were made in Australia. Now that's some damn powerful marketing!

Sounds reasonable. I used 5W30 in Subaru’s due to head gasket issues. Those engines burned though the 0W20 faster than you could fill it. I don’t believe the Tacoma v6 have those problems.

I haven't had a Subaru or Toyota that used any oil between owners manual recommended oil changes. Five Subies and three Toys. Lots of miles.

What are you doing to your vehicles that causes them to lose oil?

Since every other change is dealer based, you clearly trust what they use.

Using 'better' every other change won't improve or fix anything.

So either find out what's in their bulk containers and use that or just use the proper SAE and viscosity on your changes with whatever is on sale.

Those headgasket prone Subie's rotted away before head gaskets were a problem around here

    I'll say my piece again.

You bought a Toyota at least in part because they are reliable, and are so when you follow the owners manual.

What problem do you think you are solving?
Engine failure? I can guarantee that if you use the recommended oil you won't have engine failure from an oil issue.
Engine wear? Are you worried about those three psi of compression at 300,000 miles?

Make sure you keep the end goal in sight. What do you gain over running Walmart Supertech?

my one subie didn’t burn oil but that was a lease. Found out from my friend that all their returned leased subies get fresh head gaskets before they go on their used car lot.

my Toyota engine issue was not a burning oil problem. It just gets noisier. Not sure if unique to mobile one but you’ll find several threads in tundra forums 1UR engines getting noisier with certain oil brands (same specs). I just happen to do both engine oil changes (1UR and 2GR) with the same onsale oil from Costco and noticed it right away. Back to the yota stuff and no longer an issue.

Not sure. The 2013 Forester started to use oil around 115,000 miles. Started changing oil at 4,000 vs 5,000 miles. When I switched to 5W30 the oil consumption was much less so I went back to 5,000 changes. I made the assumption it was a head gasket since the boxer engineers were known for that, and there are no noticeable leaks. This has been my daily ride and not only reliable as hell but sure footed as a mountain goat.
We also have a 2016 Outback with 55,000 that doesn’t use a drop of oil.

Decided to switch from Forester to Tacoma only because I miss having a pickup and granddaughter needs car for college and work. The Forester will get her around in the Wisconsin winters with confidence.

I own a 05 civic and a 08 tacoma, I buy costco Kirkland full synthetic oil when it goes on sale, it was about $3.30 a quart a few months ago, I buy the box of 20 quarts at a time and I've had no issues. Previously I used pennzoil full synthetic when napa would have a sale lined up with the pennzoil rebate but its been a a few years since I've stumbled across that deal of under $3.00 a quart.

Havoline OW-20 from Walmart. Comes in a 6QT box, usually under $30. Carries the highest API classification and category. I change at 7,500mi intervals just to split the difference of factory recommendations.

Not sure why other oil brands haven't changed to 6QT packages. They're super convenient.

Old mechanic once told me not to worry about the brand of oil, just make sure it shows on the dip stick.

I don't know what I'm going to do today. It's going to get hot again. I just watched Mission Battle of the Baggers. It was a wet race and not as exciting as the dry races. They were actually sliding less in the wet.

I guess I'll start planning on date rape night with the wife. Got to decide where to go eat. I've been craving some sashimi which she don't feed me anymore. She's not into sushi but likes anyone of the teriyaki dinners. Ribs or steak sounds good too. So hard to decide and I really don't like to have to wait long.

Jeeps creepers... I use basically whatever I feel like. But usually Amsoil or Penzoil. Average day is 5w-30, winter time is 0w30 and, summer on long trips/ if i'm planning to tow alot then 40wt oil. I only really stopped using 0w20 because I didn't like how loud the engine was after a long highway drive. Around town only though I would go back to 0w20 year round. Again any brand really.

It's not "required" here but I still tend to look for the dexos1 spec as a minimum when my favourite brands can't be had

I got Toyota Full Syn 0w-20 from my dealer for less than $7 / qt. Not sure if they have other weights.

Otherwise I buy cases or 5gal jugs of Napa Full Synthetic when it's on sale. And I run it 5,000-10,000
