Hey. I never noticed this before so not sure if it is old or new. Checked my oil today and noticed this coffee colored gunk. Was under cap and top of oil fill neck.

Anything to be concerned of? Headed to dealer soon for my free oil change. So can have it addressed.

Mine looks the same. Saw it when I changed oil last time. Drain oil looked fine. Coolant level was good. Got 80000 miles on it.

Looks like the same gunk that accumulates in my oil catch can. Of course, what's in my catch can is blowby from the PCV but it looks identical. Does it smell like gas? The creamed-coffee colored stuff in my catch can is basically going to be a mixture of oil, air, and gas.

Edit: Just checked the cap on my 1GR and it has the same substance, although much less than in your pic. It does indeed smell gassy so I would say it's residual blowby of some sort.

It's normal, caused by short trips, mostly in colder environments. Condensation collects in the engine when it's cold. On a short trip, the water vapor does not burn up but rises to the highest part of the engine (oil cap area) where it mixes with oil residue causing the milky substance in the cap.

That cant be good for the internals of the engine.. Start taking the long way to work every once in a while

Will disappear if you take longer trips during cold weather, or wait for spring-summer weather, then it will disappear ,and return again in the colder weather.

    Very unlikely

It is caused by short trips, correct. This isn't a good thing, and should not be considered normal. It means that you nead to get out and go for a nice long drive. It's a sign that you aren't getting the engine to a high enough temp to evaporate the moister in the air out of the system.

If your truck has this, go for a long drive at least once a week. On road or off doesn't matter. Get the engine up to operating temperature and run it for at least another 20 minutes or so. Long run times aren't hard on engines. Million mile engines rarely get shut off. It's the cold starts and internal moisture that kills engines.

All vehicles need a good highway run once in awhile. Or even a long regular drive. Especially in the cold season. Gotta get the engine up to operating temperature, and let the engine burn that moisture off. If you try to do that regularly, you'll see none or a lot less of that.

It's a good excuse to go on a nice drive.

I have had this stuff in my cap several times. I use Supertech Full Synthetic oil, 5 k oil changes and Toyota oem filters. When I saw this recently I added 6 oz of Rislone oil treatment to bring up to full. When I check over the weekend the stuff was gone. I drive about 3 miles to work and it warms up then but I do take highway trips several time a week so it does get up to operating temp very often. Weather? Humidity? I'm not sure but it's gone now. I have about 1000 miles to next oil change. I think I'll add Rislone again as the 0.2 quart (+ 5 even quarts) fill up.

Plenty of threads here on the same topic.

While I don't care to consider it 'normal', for some reason it does seem to be pretty normal for the Tacoma (and I suppose like engines in other forms?)

But it's certainly not a blown head gasket.

Be careful with those 'free' oil changes. Sometimes vehicles leave with more issues than they arrived with. I'd mark the oil filter to know it was changed. If a tire rotation is included, a chalk mark or two on the inner sidewall will help you validate that as well.

I change my oil religiously; see this every now and then. Never really concerned me since I saw it on my wrx, and see it when I change the oil in my wife’s outback. Don’t fret.
