    haha! I knew I'd get a rash of shit! I'm an old timer, guys, so forgive me for thinking in terms of a carburetors fuel/air mixture washing intake manifolds!
    Fuel injection is a new concept for me, but really, please educate me, what difference if the air intake gets oily? Can you link it to a quantifiable problem?
    All I can see is it actually serves as a Top Oiler, a gadget sold to deliver oil to the valves as exposed to combustion products. A catch can looks purdy, but seriously, isn't this just another gadget designed to lighten your pocket book?

    Check the PCV lines periodically. I found out the hard way today. I just drove from colorado to Florida and my can barely had anything in it. The line coming off the outlet side of the motor came loose and blasted nasty oil all over my motor for the past 2,000 miles. Fun stuff.

    Did you not see the picture I posted of the oem BMW catch can. Which also returns the oil back to the crank case? Complements the article which Lord Helmet posted.

    Some systems divert recovered oil to the crankcase, but all gases from all systems are piped to the air intake. Venting to the atmosphere would violate clean air standards

    This explanation (authored by a supplier of catch cans), claims "increased chance" of this and that, but fails to deliver any solid facts

    I saw this picture. It demonstrates an OEM catch can system that diverts recovered oil back to the crankcase of a supercharged engine, apparently a valid reason for having a catch can. Does Toyota offer this option with it's blowers? May be worthy of an inquiry!

    Thank you for that, I rest my case.

    You missed the point of my picture. It doesn't matter that it is on a s/c engine or not. The point is that OEM's know about the purpose of catch cans and implement them. That particular style due to the lack of maintenance required by the user. Crawford makes a similar aftermarket one for Subarus. OEM's with only install them when their price point is high enough. It is not a top oiler. It is essentially an oil separator.

    If you were to remover your upper plenum immediately after reading this, you would find oil film all over the intake runners, lower plenum, and intake valves. The engine running is alone what causes the build up because it pulls a vacuum from the valve train, all the way to the oil pan. Fresh air side inlet, is on the intake, post MAF sensor. Outlet is on the driver side valve cover, which is then sucked into the rear of the upper plenum.

    What do you think that oil that goes through the system does? Well, it collects everywhere that it moves through. The intake tract, the valves, the pistons/piston rings, exhaust valves, and cats.

    Ever had an exhaust leak and seen what happens if it leaks onto an exhaust component? It burns and bakes on. Same thing happens on the pistons rings, valves, and cats. Enough of it on the rings and valves, and poor sealing will occur. Poor sealing means loss of compression and more blow by, which amplifies the oil vapor consumption.

    There have been a few people on XRU to post before and after pictures of their TRD heat exchangers. Nearly looked clean after the catch can install, and the same oil change interval. I specifically remember Coup being one member to post such a picture.

    That oil build up on that exchanger will also decrease its cooling efficiency. As small as it already is, it needs not any thing else to lessen its ability.

    Good discussion. Does anyone know if the supercharger option from Toyota has a catch can? It seems that if other manufacturers (Which ones?) incorporate it, that Toyotas supercharger would also have it.

    Bottom line...engines have numerous different filtering components/systems to HELP its efficacy, and to prolong its utmost performance...these ideas were incorporated into the functionality of the engine by research and design engineers who had integral input in its conception, and design...I don't understand the arguement of why not utilize these very components, or Modify with them, to help the longevity, and performance...Just because Taco's don't come fitted with this oil can filtering system, does not negate its potential useful purpose....Put one on and STFU......:D
