I'm in a dry, dusty desert, on dirt roads all the time. 5k OCI for me.

I've done my own work exclusively on mine since the dealer screwed up the simple first 5k service of rotating the tires. One lug nut on the left front fell off and I found the rest just barely hanging on, luckily I or someone else wasn't wrecked. If they can't get that right, they're certainly not touching anything more important.

Anyway, the way I see it, I jack up the front and back and put it on jack stands to rotate the tires and give the undercarriage a look over with a flashlight every 6 months. While it's up there, may as well change the oil. I'll be under there anyway, 6qts of Mobil 1 and an OEM filter is about $38 and not going to break the bank twice a year, and driving around during our daily 95 degree Florida summer is not exactly what I would think Toyota considers easy "normal" conditions.

Every 1K miles I put it through a modified dialysis unit I converted from blood to oil.
It cleans the oil, adds back the additives and I only used one roll of duct tape and a few zip ties to make the conversion.

As you can see there is a lot of wiseass wisdom from the under 30 crowd,...
Those of us that are from the muscle car era, over 50 crowd,... Know that the first change "is recommended" at 1000 - 2500 on vehicles and 100 - 500 on motorcycles.
This is before the 1980 crowd invented imagination creation,... yeah thats the think big and take what you think you deserve school of thought.

Engines are still mechanical as much as it's hard to believe and oil is still a lubricant made for one purpose.
Its your vehicle and your life, change it soon and change it at 5000 and spend a extra $50 dollars a year,...
For the 10,000 mile crowd,... they now make a 20,000 mile oil,... yeah.

Here’s a thought. If you drive 10,000 miles and replace the oil and filter about once a year an extra change at 5,000 miles will result in about $50 more every year. To me, I wouldn’t quibble about $50 for what is arguably a better situation. Those who scoff at OIC’s less than 10,000 miles also have thousands invested in mods which will induce maintenance issues that cost thousands more. We are talking about $50!?!?!? Just do it and move on.

Pretty convenient 20 year gap you have there but large enough to forget about technology and the availability of synthetics.

Oil change intervals vary based on several factors and several tests. Most people don’t even know what there oil specs actually are aside from the numbers on the front. German cars have 20000 oil change intervals and they aren’t using a special 20k oil, been like that for decades.

Do whatever makes you happy. There is another thread somewhere (think his name was Rannyhill) he had to gets his changed after 5 miles, because the dealership forgot to put the plug back in. Unfortunately, his wasn’t really by choice though…

Well I always punish myself by reading though every single one of these oil threads but your response sir, made it all worth it lol.

FWIW (if the OP is even still reading this thread), I do my oil every 10K miles because most of my miles are on the highway. No rough conditions as detailed in the owner’s manual.

Exactly, been to germany to visit relatives. Their appalled how we waste our petroleum resources here in the u.s.
I use change my oil in my 2001 4.7 tundra once a year every 15k miles or so. I never had any issue till i sold the truck and its still running fine with its owner today with well over 300k miles.

Only one issue with that. I'm a product of the over 50 crowd, but have seen big changes in the synthetics, and additive packages we have today vs the 60's, and 70's. Even the filters have gotten better catching smaller particles. Oil no longer breaks down in 3-5k miles. Mobil1 has been tested under severe conditions to go twice that, and more with no engine wear before needing to be replaced. Imo, 5k miles is fine for severe use...for the rest of us 10k, or a year whatever comes first.

I offroad and tow a trailer. Oil changes every 5k. Dealer did the 1st oil change at 5k no questions asked, they said I get two free, does not matter when I take them.

Todays items are designed from the factories to not last as long, so they can sell you a new one of whatever. If you ware out your engine prematurely, Toyota likes that, they sell you a new one.....

I personally change at around 7500 miles. Just to be different, but my truck has an oil life monitor, and I just go by that, when the truck tells me to, I change it.

On the other hand if my toyota engine wore out prematurely after doing the recommended manufactures oil changes, you can bet for sure i'm not going to buy another toyota. I would think others the same.

If your vehicle use puts it into the “special conditions” category then your OCI will be what the Toyota maint schedule calls for. I do mine at 5K or 6mo.

For those of you who are all wise, is this wisdom supported by an independent lab analysis of your oil from your engine?

    If not, you're just guessing.

No, you don't have to do it every change. Yes, it's actual science, specific to your truck and your product brand. Kinda like getting a blood test.

Don't wanna bother with lab work? Just follow the owners manual for type/viscosity/duty cycle and you'll be fine.

For those who think extended OCIs are a conspiracy to blow up motors and sell new product, I can't imagine what other terrible things you 'know' is happening in the world. It must be a miserable existence.
