They went back on their inline 4 sometime ago. Probably has to do with the engine design more and the cost.

Do not have to have a bypass valve built into the engine. Cheaper for Toyota?

Canister type oil filter requires a housing. The housing is a decent chunk of aluminum+cost to manufacture, bolts to attach , o-rings and actual cap.

I went down to my local mechanic today to get my tire patched. When I got there, he was in the middle of an oil change from hell on a 2019 Tacoma. He had broken the "ears" off of the plastic filter housing, cracked the filter so that it was leaking and still couldn't get it off despite trying every tool in his arsenal. He clearly was not having a good day.

Even if he did get it off, a replacement housing was not readily available from his suppliers. He did have a used housing with broken ears but no leaks. I looked at the wrench he was using which was a multi application stamped steel job. I told him I had a nice aluminum wrench that might work and offered to go home and get it while he patched my tire.

My wrench (Motivx mx2320) got the old filter off and the replacement installed no sweat. On closer examination, his wrench (which had notches for the ears) was bottoming out on the ears and was not going on far enough to engage the flutes on the bottom of the filter housing.

In the end, he got to go on with his day and didn't charge me for repairing my tire. Motivx for the win!

    Cool Story!

I did an oil change last week at Auto Hobby Shop on Dover AFB...$8/hr for lift.

Getting the hang of it since this is at least my 3rd time with Aluminum Housing.

Using the larger 27mm socket on the outer portion of the wrench and a breaker bar makes for an easy turn.

Using Fumoto valve is a slow drain...attendant was asking me how long I was going to be with mobile drain dolly!

Apparently, they use to have 2 drain dollys but now are down to one.

I took the full hour to change oil/clean the bay.

It was a car care nut video, he said the difference is in the bypass valve design, so you won’t know unless something happens to trigger that.

To prove I learned my lesson and that you can teach an old dog new tricks . . . . maybe -we will see when I do the next oil change.
But I got all the cool stuff everyone has been talking about on this thread so that the next oil change I am not going to do it the same old way I have been doing it for years and years I'm going to use this stuff. Notice I have the O ring in the correct location which is what I screwed up last time

    I like your enthusiasm!

Yes, these 3rd Gen Engines present quite a challenge for some/all of us with Housing Filter Oil Change.

But, we are here to engage with one another and enjoy interactions while learning something new.

Here's a snip-it of last week's oil change at Auto Hobby Shop on Dover AFB.

My composite housing is my back-up (not weird at all to have it available in my truck) and the Fumoto/Housing Drain Tubes.

I got 4 filters from Newark ToyotaWorld Dealership (Buy 3/1Free) while I was waiting to have U-Bolts seated properly. (Story in my Intro Thread)

It shows the o-ring placement on the box.
The fumoto valve is pretty nice too, minimizes the mess.

Yes it does - of course that is assuming the one performing operator maintenance looks at the picture carefully and does not assume because they have done it before they already know exactly where the O ring is supposed to go on a housing that is just a little bit different.

me too but i think i'd miss my left...uh...less than my left arm, especially cranking on the filter housing for the first time after service folks tightened it. just the left one, though.

Aren't you near an Air Force Base? (Pope)

I saw your Army icon so I'm guessing you have access to the base.

    Unless, it's far away...then, sorry!

Oil change from Hell.....Damn 1st time ever, I couldn't get the oil filter drain cap off . I had to remove the whole thing causing an Exxon Valdez incident on my driveway. Coupled with the fact I have to remove my whole 2nd Gen aluminum Pelfreybilt skid plate with my floor jack each time, and I spilled new oil from the 12 qt. garage box...
