Hello All, 2019 SR, Auto, 4 cyl. When I was changing the oil I first drained the oil pan then I used a nail to make a hole in the filter and drained the oil from the filter so it would not be as messy when removing the filter. When I removed the filter my arm was still covered in oil. Should I have made the hole in a different spot ? Oil drained from the filter after making the hole, where is this oil coming from ? Thank you for any help/comments.OilFilteer.HEIC.jpg

@VE7OSR thank you for the help. I didn't know what a "oil galleries" was ,,, lol had to look it up.
    • Oil galleries: Passages in the engine used to move oil to the various parts.

There are various techniques to remove the 4-cylinder oil filter without bathing in dirty oil. Do a search, you'll find the info. I think some people poke a hole like you do.

After you loosen the oil filter slightly with a wrench, use a disposable fast food beverage cup over the oil filter to remove by hand.

I place a wide oil drain pan under the filter, crack the filter open till it starts dripping, and then let it finish dripping. Afterwards, I finish undoing it/replacing filter.
An oil extractor makes emptying the oil pan super clean/easy.

My personal favorite... cut a 6" x 10" cardboard, slide it between the crossmembers and wedge it between the filter housing and the engine block. Then loosen the filter and break the gasket seal, let the oil drip down the cardboard into the pan. After it's done dripping, remove the filter and lower it into the pan being careful to keep the gasket side straight up. I've become good at this over the years, usually no drops at all but once in a while I get jiggly with the filter and a drop or two will hit the floor. Still pretty clean though, no oil ever touches the engine block.

Oil also comes from the very top of the filter, above the anti-drain valve where the top plate is...but even so I get very little oil since I too drain the filter. If you also remove the oil pan drain bolt that will allow those oil passages to drain back into the pan.
