5,000 for synthetic 3000 for regular if you're keeping the truck 10,000 or what ever if U R getting a new one every 3 years or so. Filter are not made to filter properly over 7,500. It's that simple.

After this 25k oil change im doing it myself. I should have known better than to pay for my "free" maintenance services. Question is, how do i keep records to show ive been up to date on the oil changes.

Save the receipts for oil/filter purchases etc. and keep a log of dates, mileage...keep it simple.

It will cost you a total of around $25 for a good quality oil (5.5 Qts) and filter plus 20 minutes of your time, well worth it.

I go 5,000 ish with synthetic. Im pretty good about it, but i might go over a few hundred until that maint reqd light bugs the hell out of me.

I keep the receipts for all maint items, though im not terribly organized about it.

All you guys going by mileage should really be spending $30 for a used oil analysis. This way you know exactly how many miles you can go on oil, instead of changing out dino at 3k or synthetic at 5k.

There are plenty of cases of modern cars on modern oils going 10-15k on synthetic with no issues. At roughly $30 for a DIY oil change (with synthetic), you could be saving $60 EACH year if you spend $30 ONCE for a used oil analysis.

thats assuming your engine conditions never change. I follow the manual, its easy, and dont mind shelling out a couple more bucks for synthetic

You and I both are still under warranty so even I admit I am changing synthetic at 5k, but this is only until I'm out of the Toyota powertrain warranty.

But modern oils are so good that you'd be surprised how much abuse you can put them through and still extend the oil change interval. There are lots of reports at BobIsTheOilGuy where people running turbo engines are able to run extended drain intervals and the oil still has plenty of life left after 10k or 12k.

Agreed. People changing their oil after only 3K are just wasting money.

For those of you that use synthetic and extended (> 5000 miles) intervals, do you change your filter sooner?
I have heard max 7500 miles for filter, but haven't heard any time recommendation, ie every 6 months.

Before my Tacoma, had a '93 Mazda B2600, oil change was specified as 7500 miles, put 200,000 on it with no problems.

Any opinions/recommendations on when to change filter if you're changing oil at more than 5000 miles?

It all depends on your driving. The manual is a good guide for that. Lots of highway you can extend the interval. If the truck sits or is used for short trips change it sooner.

Personally I change mine every 5k, works out to be twice a year with how I drive.

Create an account on the Toyota Owners' Website: https://ssl.toyota.com/owners/login?&showMergeAlert=true
Enter all your own services as "owner performed." (Not sure exactly what the phrase is, but you can enter the services that you do on the truck.)
Hopefully the dealership has been updating this online maintenance record. If not, you can enter all the services yourself, even past ones. Obviously be sure you keep all receipts forever.

Depends what filter you are using. Crap filters are barely adequate up to 5000 miles. Premium filters (Denso/Toyota, Bosch, PureOne, WIX, etc) are good up to 7500 miles. Extended service filters (Mobil 1 EP, K&N, Amsoil, etc) are good up to 15,000 miles. I am not an expert and I am not providing hard numbers -- remember that vehicle usage, environmental conditions, and other factors will affect the longevity of the oil filter. As they say, YMMV :D I place a few very strong magnets on the outside of the filter canister to catch tiny ferrous particles in the oil and keep them out of the filter media, which extends the filter service life. This magnet trick is proven effective and I swear by it. (Not an attempt to threadjack.)

I have never changed just the filter. One time I changed just the oil when I was running an extended service filter but I don't do that anymore. Now I run premium filters and synthetic oil together for an appropriate period and get nearly maximum use from each.

For the last 10-12 years I've done 10K on the oil and changed the filter at 5K. I use synthetic and think I'm probably being conservative. I could probably go 15K and change the filter at 5K. Even with conventional oil I'd never change at under 5K and 7K or 8K is probably OK.
