Wondering how often people change their oil when not driving any more due to working from home, and stuffs..

My thought is that you still want to change it at least once a year since the acids and gunk are sitting in the crevices and pan and etching the metal and giving off toxic fumes, but maybe that's not the case.

If you only drive it 50-100 miles a year lately then the oil hasn't even begun to break in and release its chemical goodness, so perhaps just adding something extra would be good enough to wait another year or so?

There is no acid or gunk. Change it yearly.

Very simple. Don't add anything to your oil or fuel. Change oil every year or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first. Regardless of how often you drive it or how many miles.

    Don't overcomplicate it.

If miles are that low its tough to change it but oil is cheap and yearly wouldn't hurt. Such short drives and oil not getting to temp is what will hurt you. Plus being where your at the condensation or water wont be able to get burned off.

Maybe just go drive for 30 minutes on your lunch break. Sitting is the worst thing you can do for yourself, your truck, your boat, etc. If you don't use it, just sell it; otherwise change your oil every year and don't try and complicate it. What's the justification for not?

I change it once a year ~ maybe a little over (few months) even if only 3-4k miles.

Also, I would try to find non-ethanol gas and keep it filled. As far as oil changes, I would do every 6 months, due to condensation, if you do it yourself. What's 100 dollars a year in oil changes.

    50-100 miles a year??
Sell it, no need for maintenance, insurance, taxes, storage fees, etc etc etc.
Hell, sell it 6 months ago when the market was paying insane prices.

The bigger issue is gas. Oil will be mostly fine but the gasoline will turn into nasty gunk and fuck up your entire fuel system. I needs to get a fresh tank of gas once every 3-4 months minimum

With the price of insurance why even own a vehicle if that's all driving you do? With the price i pay a year for insurance if i only drove 75 miles a year it would come out to $14 a mile.

Oil is the least of your worries if you are not driving it. I really don't understand the obsession with maintenance with a non-driver. Pretty sure if you are driving less than a thousand miles a year that it would take you 100 years to get to 100K.

I had the same thought; why would you own a vehicle and pay for maintenance / insurance, etc if you only drive 150 miles a year? Ever heard of Uber?

PS: to answer your question, yearly.

Jeez I thought I didn't drive that much until this thread. I still stabil my gas in the truck if I know it's going to sit along with my generator and everything else. Oil 1x a year in all my cars.

I alway change my oil once a year, or a little over, whether 15k miles, or 10k miles. Back in the 90's it was every 7500 miles, but that was with regular motor oil. The synthetics we have today will easily double that.

Some good points are made above. I think the takeaway from this is: change the oil at least once a year. Pick a date you can remember. I've chosen June 1st to be my new annual air filter change. Easy to remember and the weather should be nice, generally speaking.

Hey everyone. Changed my buddies 16’ taco oil for him. He had sludge at the bottom of the oil drained out from the pan. 7k miles since his last change. About a cup worth of this “sludgy” oil. It’s pretty obvious since it doesn’t flow as well as the rest of the oil when pouring it out. Also noticeable amount of metal shavings at the bottom of the catch container…all dealer oil changes at 10k or once a year. I drove it after and the engine seemed confused on what timing to use. It seemed like the new oil was slowly speeding up the timing. The dirty oil was slowing down the timing or something. Less power under 3k rpm at first (it’s tuned) after changing.
This year 16’ uses oil pressure for the VVT system. Dirty oil can mess with that for sure.
Feels great now after about 20 miles. I wouldn’t wait past 5k for a change. I told him and he agreed when he smelt the oil and saw me pour it into the waste containers. I will change his oil at 5k again to see what it looks like.
And man they really crank down the bolts at the dealer for everything (skid plates, pan and oil filter housing). Gotta love oil changes in these trucks.
