Full synthetic every 5000 miles. Documented in the service book I keep in the glove box.

I think the manual has an interval of 10k with synthetic but this seems maybe a bit much, I'd probably shoot for closer to 5k with synthetic. I personally aim for 3k and usually end up changing mine around 3500-4k. Its all personal preference. There are lots of oil analysis threads you can read.

 

The answer is yes, but you forgot to ask about brand, weight and compatible filter.

Pick a type, pick a weight, pick an interval.

Someone here will support it, others won't.

You can't go wrong following the owners manual.

 

This may be true for the 4 cylinder, but the V6 is specified for 5k interval and synthetic is optional, not required. Personally, I use Castrol conventional 5-30 at 5k, with either Toyota oem or Wix filters.

Follow the owners manual recommendations, use a high quality oil and filter and change it at the interval that best fits your situation. I use synthetic and a OEM filter and change it as close to 5k as possible. Like others have said there are loads of posts about oil, second only to "what's the best tire", so search here and elsewhere on the internet. If you really want hard numbers order a kit from Blackstone Labs and have them analyze it.

 

4000-5000 miles if using conventional oil -- 7500-10,000 if using synthetic, OEM filter...you'll be fine

 

5K or 6 months, synthetic only. Time can be just as important as mileage.

 

Every 8k and I use Toyota synth. Bob the oil guy site gives it favorable reviews.

 

Damn good point, and I should have mentioned it be cause I have yet to put on 5g's in 6 months. I have always gone on time, but I stretch it to 7 or 8 months sometimes...

 

Don't do this. It's wasting money.

If it's a street rig that sees highway often: full synth every 10k
If it's a street rig that sees road/highway mix : full synth every 10k
If it's a street rig that sees road often : full synth 8-10k
If it's a real offroad truck that actually sees heavy dirt and not the occasional trail: full synth every 5-8k OR, long life 15kmi full synth every 10k.

I use long life synth every 10k.

AND ONLY EVER USE OEM OIL FILTERS.

 

What about time? My truck at the current time is a garage queen. Not even 13,000 miles.

 

An oil analysis will show you both time and mileage that you are throwing away. There is variation across vehicles of course, based on wear and driving conditions, but most of the time it's way longer than good PM owners 'think' it should be.

I won't even tell you how long a multi degreed tribologist I know, who owns his own chemical lab, is seeing for potential time intervals on tight, low mile motors and good OTC oils. But I will tell you it's way longer than 6 months or a year.

So, get your own tested. Or not. It's your money. Although it is our resources and environment.

 

Thanks Bill. This is my first showroom purchase and I do confess to getting all caught up in the warranty process. That's why I have been so anal about record keeping.

 

I appreciate someone who is a detailed record keeper. I have an Excel workbook on each vehicle, including every drop of fuel put in them, annual averages and lifetime averages. And much more of course.

I will say this. Not everyone cares much about a warranty. But most folks do. During the warranty period, it's great to follow the manual and procedures, and if you don't have the dealer do the work, have it heavily documented.

Once the warranty is over, you can actually reduce your costs, improve your service work and have a happy vehicle.

Remember, the OEM has to make a generic baseline that is safe enough to consider all knuckleheads with a reasonable margin of error. They make long warranties to sell vehicles, not because they want to fulfill them.

 

Hey guys, I'm glad this thread popped up, I had meant to ask earlier and it slipped my mind.
I got my taco at the end of July and according to the carfax, it still had a couple thousand miles until it was due for an oil change, but my Dad and I figured that we should go ahead and change the oil because it looked like it was over the time period, plus we didn't know what kind of oil it had been using.
My dad swears by Mobile 1 synthetic, and its been awhile since I owned a vehicle but that is what I used previously also.
I had intended on staying with Toyota OEM filters and getting the TRD filter (http://trdparts4u.toyotaofdallas.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=276431)
but since my Dad was helping me, he insisted on getting a Mobile 1 Synthetic filter also. We went to the stealership and the did not have any of the filters in stock and he further said it was proof we needed to get the Mobile 1 filter lol. So that is what we got and changed the oil.
Well my question is on the next oil change coming up, Should I go with the TRD OEM filter? Or is the Mobile 1 filter better? Has anyone had experience with both?

 

I would bare minimum twice a year. End of spring and end of fall.
