Oil change mess. drained transmission fluid instead

My first time oil change as you can guess. I bought all the stuff from Kragens and printed out the instruction from the Ultimate oil change thread here.
I had the toughest time removing the factory oil filter so I just drove a scewdriver though and that did the job.

Then I went underneath and in excitement opened the transmission fluid drain plug. when I saw clear redish fluid coming out, I knew it was trans fluid. so I quickly put the plug back. I probably drained maybe 1 quarts of it.

Now the problem is that, I couldnt find where the transmission fluid dip stick was to check the level. Does any one know how I can check the trans level and which transmission fluild to add?

Please help.

 

The tranny has to be a certain temp. There is no dip stick.

 

its a sealed system. i did the same thing. you need to pump transmission fluid back in. so theres no dipstick. just take it to toyota.

This is a mistake that is common on 2nd gen tacomas.
The bad news is that there is no dip stick. You will need to go to the thread that has this procedure. It basically says the vehicle needs to be a certain operating temp , engine running, in neutral and have enough toyota syn trans oil to come out the over flow bolt at the front of the trans pan.
DO NOT use anything but toyotas trans fluid, period.
To get this fluid into the trans pan you will need a fluid pump that can be bought at most auto parts stores only about $10. The fill hole is on the passenger side trans up and not fun to get to near the exhaust pipe. Take your time or take it to a dealer. With only one quart missing and not a long dist. to a dealer I would probably drive it. Good luck...

How many quarts does that pan hold? Is some been in this situation and refilled the fluid themselves? I am still looking for that thread. appreciate if some one can forward the trans fluid fill link to me.

 

And if I take it to the dealer? what do I tell them?

Tell them what happened, since you will be paying for it anyways.

 

if its under warenty tell them your friend has a truck just like yours bought around the same time and his tranny was shifting funny so when he took it in the fluid was low... lol and if they can check yours too because you felt it shift hard a few times when it was cold

 

I read the article about doing this myself but thats a little complicated for me. I am pretty sure I just drained probably less than a quart before realising it was atf. Hopefully thats enough for me to take to the dealer.

Its the one under the engine. Its on a smallish black pan.

 

It's in the hole of your IFS skid plate.
