I have 3,905 miles on the Tacoma in 13 months. The dealer didn't want to do it, but I forced them to change the oil at 1500 miles. You are supposed to change the oil every 6 months or 5k miles I believe. I am way under on miles but over on time.

What is the thinking on mileage vs. time? With the synthetic oil, I was thinking mileage is more important than time. But, I don't mind spending a little extra to insure a 200k or better life on the truck.

2023 oil is 1 year or 10,000 miles

Severe is 6 month 5000 but you arent anywhere near severe, even in in alaska you're barely driving it.

I think most people it too often on here, but you were correct, 1 year 10,000 is minimum.

Is it inclusive service package? Sometimes they dont like to do early.

Toyota says 10kmi or 1 year for normal service, 5kmi or 6mo for severe.
If you drive that few of miles you could just change every year to technically stay within the requirements.

Yeah, I’d just change yearly at that rate.
I’m not one for way over doing it, but An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I’d also be using some sort of battery maintainer with that little use,,, but that’s me.

It's more down to how it's driven.
If your driving nothing but short trips where the oil never gets hot enough to evaporate moisture and such you will deteriorate the oil very quickly but if you drive long trips when you do drive I wouldn't be scared of running it a year, no way I'd go 10k on any oil though I don't care what the manufacturer says.

It's your truck and your money. Change it on a schedule you're comfortable with. I do a change every 5,000 miles.

Just take the number of thousand miles and if you can divide it by 5 evenly, change your oil. It will last the longest possible. Don’t over think this.

Really don't think you have to worry about getting to 200,000 miles. At your current rate that will take over 55 years. Gas will be in very short supply by then.

    Good point!
    The math doesn’t lie.
It doesn’t hurt to plan to leave loved ones nice things,,,, or their children too.

In 55 years the Tacoma might have a Mr. fusion.

I change it once a year, that's 5 or 6k miles for me.

Every 5,000 miles period... end of story.

Or, every 6 months: Just before Summer heat sets in, and just before winter cold sets in.

It's pennies on the dollar for longevity ...

I drive 2,500 miles per year.
Just turned 2,500 miles after 13 months owning new truck.

Changed oil at 1,500 last summer.
Plan to change oil again this summer, once per year, or every 2,500 miles.

I'll never understand why anyone with that 3.5 2gr-fks would risk a 10k miles interval.
Give the thing a chance, it needs all the help it can get.

Not to hijack but how does this effect the warranty. Does the dealer want to see the truck every 6 months for the multi point inspection and refuse to cover something if there is no documentation.

Personally I think that duration is more important than mileage. People don’t think about how long their vehicles idle in school pick up lines, fast food drive throughs, and traffic. They may put only a few miles but really rack up the hours on an engine. Most people operate their vehicles in what would be classified as severe.

warranty is warranty. If a warranty is 4/50 then the warranty is 4/50.

warranties can require proof of quality oil changes on time.

if a persons engine is visibly sludged, with no record of service, and incorrect oil filter present then it can be made non warranty. As it should be.

If you go by the service handbook, most usage is severe.
