So then what's the difference if you go twice as long and spend a couple more bucks using synthetic? No difference and I'm using a better product.

I just switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic today with 1,000 miles on my truck.

Next oil change will be in another 5,000 miles (6,000 odo) with Mobil 1 Syn 5w30 with a new oil filter, valvoline is the brand my shop uses.

Synthetic is cheaper!!! I recommend going 3,000 on regular oil and 5,000+ on synthetic.

So for a few bucks more you can use synthetic twice as long.

I'm not sure what you're saying about valvoline. You said you switched to Mobile 1... did you not like the valvoline oil for some reason? From what I gather, Mobile 1 is the best out there, but did you have problems with valvoline that made you switch?

When I picked up my truck...dealer said every 5,000 miles. And they said first service was on the house.

I've always liked the 3000 mile deal-it just feels right to me. It doesn't cost a lot, so why not give a little extra measure for the truck that pays you so well with reliability, coolness, and work.

Exactly. I'm not going to get into the benefits of synthetic vs. dino but I have the oil studies to prove that what I'm doing is better for my engine so I go with what works and that's synthetic.

I use Pennzoil Platinum every 5K miles which works out to about 2.5 oil changes per year.

Im a tech for toyota and if you are changeing oil every 3k your just wasteing your money especially if your useing synthetic like mobile 1 and mobile 1 is the best synthentic your can buy. ready your maintence requirements these ppl makeing these cars know what they are doing. I saw somone say they were going to change theres every 3500 with synthetic, dont blow your money man. I support synthetic i run it in mine but change it at 5k. Also always change the filter and always use a toyota filter

AMSOIL is good. It's all I've used for years. But don't take anyone's advertised claims, test it yourself with oil analysis. I go 16000 miles between oil changes using AMSOIL 5W-30 because I have testing to see how far I was comfortable pushing it. I'm sure Mobil 1 and all the other synthetic brands can go far beyond 5000 miles, but Oil Analysis is the only way to verify that.

    Good luck

M-1 isn't the best oil you can buy. Oil analysis proves it. Most think that Amsoil, Redline, Motul, or German Castrol are the "best you can buy".

Remember, there is a difference between "the best you can buy" and the "best" oil. Of course, you have to define "best" if you're going to make comparisons. Some use the criteria of an oil that you can do longer OCIs and still have the oil doing it's job. For others, it might mean it's cheaper to use. And yet others might define "best" as whichever oil is on sale that week :D

The filter plays an important role as well. I agree that the OEM filters are good. In fact, I bought a case of OEM Toyota filters for $4 each. Those are the ones made in Thailand, but you can still buy the Japanese made ones for about $12 each. Others think that the extra money spent on Amsoil EaO filters is worth it. Many swear by Purolator Pure 1 filters, or M-1 filters.

The bottom line is that it's almost impossible to screw up if you use a little common sense. Don't try to go 10k miles on a dino oil, always change your filter with the oil, etc.
