Hey, look what I bought to make my oil changing easier! Its even got an air conditioner! I figure I've done over 400 oil changes in my lifetime, ~ 130 on just one 4Runner. All but six of them under the vehicle, laying on the ground. Not anymore. I figure I've got AT LEAST another 100-200 to do before I'm called Home. Almost too old to get down under there to do it, and FOR SURE too old to get back up unassisted.

SO...Mohammed no longer goes to the mountain. The mountain comes to Mohammed.

Fumoto is what it is. Nobody ever talks about the 15-20 minute wait for the oil to drain all the way out. The drain hole is smaller than a pencil lead.

I would say the same thing...until I dealt with my MINI Cooper. The drain plug was frozen on, I've never experienced anything like it. I ended up just replacing the entire pan because I had the car in service mode anyway and the oil pan gasket was toast. A lot of MINI folks switch to the Fumoto valve because of that.

Tony from Texas [tonykarter] apparently is doing what he calls others out for, lol. I guess if “he” doesn’t agree it must be sacrilege. As stated, I’m posting some info to help others who might want to do something similar. I don’t intend to offend or convince but apparently Tony is a Texas transplant because real Texans don’t wear panties.

I’ve used Fumoto valves before without any issues and just installed one on my Outback XT. I’ve got another ready to go for my taco’s 5k oil change. Just slide on a short piece of tubing and then no mess. I absolutely love the filter on top that Subaru has. I’m not a huge fan of the cartridge filters the taco uses. I may update that at some point.

Michael, I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Please explain your rant, and please be a little less esoteric and a little more explicit when you call me out, okay? I only posted a filter magnet link and a pic of my lift being used to conveniently and easily change the oil on my generator, in an oil change thread about oil change convenience, which discusses items that make doing so convenient and easy. Which of those got YOUR PANTIES in a knot?!!! Because it is obvious that YOU got YOUR PANTIES in a knot over something!

As far as being "a transplant", nope: Native Texan as it gets, born in Fort Worth. It doesn't get more NATIVE TEXAN than Fort Worth, cow town of the world. Even have a Native Texan bumper sticker on my old truck. Michael, there is a difference between moving to Texas and then living here, and BEING a Native Texan by birthright. Only God awards that. Increasingly so, many here are "all hat and no cattle". It is not hard to tell who.

If it is any consolation Michael, I have ordered both the spin-on adapter and the drain valve thanks to this thread.

Simply trying to share the thought of forums being a place where we all come together and collaborate and ask questions without fearing being called out for asking a stupid question or floating an idea. If you weren’t being contrary to that I apologize. Too many find they feel the need to show the rest of us how smart they are and many of us lose out because the free exchange of ideas gets stifled.

I echo your sentiments exactly. And for the record, I have worn panties only once. To the Guinness World Record showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at that movie theater that ran it continuously for years out on Riverside Drive in Austin. May have gotten a little carried away with the glam and Club Kid nature of the award festivities...

    BUT ONLY ONCE!

Mostly electrical shit that nobody cares about.
Because it's no longer an issue. Fumoto updated all of their valves with larger diameter drain holes. My last drain was well under 10 minutes.
    https://www.fumotousa.com/f133s.html

The only valid reason to not have a Fumoto is if you're worried about ground clearance.

Once again, for those in the back with the fragile masculinity, it's not about the hard work involved with "taking a wrench under the truck" or "saving ten minutes every six months" or being "afraid to get your hands dirty". The only reason not to run an oil drain valve is if you don't have a skid. We can spend all day debating whether or not it's worth the $30, but it's completely justifiable, safe, reliable and it does save you more time than you think.

Just receive the Wix 51085XP spin-on oil filter that fits the spin-on adapter. I've used Wix filters for years, but this has to be the heaviest, most robust oil filter I have ever held in my hand. You can tell it is a beast and up to the job. Most filter don't weigh half what this one does. Good call community!

I agreed. Plus, how often is oil changed in this world of high quality synthetics? Is it a big deal to swing a 14mm wrench every few months?

Depends. In a lifetime how many oil pan threads will you pull and strip by over-torqueing? Then you will either have to rethread the pan on block, with the attendant re-threading shards in the pan, or take the pan off to do it right. ESPECIALLY now that most oil pans are aluminum instead of steel. That is a big deal. How many times you going to let a parolee down in the pit crank down on your oil drain plug in one of those oil change shops? You KNOW management has told him, "If we have to replace an engine it is coming out of your check". How much extra torque does "your check" impart? I'd rather have him turn a valve than a wrench.

Keep you Taco 413,000 miles like I have my 4Runner and you will start wondering, how safe is the factory spec torque in this old oil pan using this old drain plug? Shouldn't I torque it just a bit more? So you do. And over the years the plug gets loose and looser in the threads as you hand-tighten it until it snugs up. And you know that ain't right.

So yeah, it could end up being a big deal. Someday.

that wouldn't have been the, long gone now, riverside 8 theater? would it?

i'm coming up on 15k. still have the free service from toyota as an option. i'll let them handle it a couple more times but threads like this have given me a lot of ideas of tools and gear to get to prepare for when i'll be taking it over.

Man, I can't remember the name, but that name does indeed ring a bell. I'm not sure it was a multi-screen. It was north of Riverside by a couple hundred yards, on a street running north off Riverside, just past Mother Earth and all the Riverside shopping centers at that time in the late 70's. Was close to the original Casita Jorge's Mexican Restaurant, still my all-time favorite. They ran the movie every Friday and Saturday nights at midnight for so long they got into the Book of World Records. It was an interesting time in Austin, when Austin was still Austintatious and truly weird.

If you remember that then you probably remember the Magic Time Machine Restaurant on the other side of I35 on Riverside. I was the Fruit of the Loom Grape. BEST JOB I ever had in college! You meet a lot of well-motivated women when you are wearing your underwear on the outside of purple tights...

I once ran smack dab into Ann and Nancy Wilson in the entrance of Mother Earth located right there too. They were coming out after sticking their heads in to see the place, having just played in the Drum, and I was going in after attending their concert. Literally ran into Ann, Nancy right behind her in that narrow hallway in. Nice as they could be. Caught me by surprise: bump into a woman, look up and it's Ann Wilson. An absolutely surreal moment.

Don’t worry about using a Fumto valve. I have had it on all my vehicles since 2002, over 500k miles total and third of them have been off road vehicles, 1987 Toyota xtra cab, 2012 JKUR (Rock crawler) and my Tacoma. With the stock skid plate your protect and with aftermarket ones, your protected more. Picture of front skid after Moab Kane Creek and the valve was fine.

for read the oil temperature, you could just get a ScanGauge and it will give you that off the OBDll port.

ah, that Casita Jorge's was off Elmont and Pleasant Valley, i think. that means the movie theater was Twins. super long gone. the location it was on is still just an overgrown empty lot.

Yep, I remember now...it was Pleasant Valley. Remember those little latino grandmas in the back hand-patting tortillas? Two frozen margarita limit? A cheese enchilada dinner with those tortillas and ONE of those epic frozen margaritas for lunch and you were going down for a nap! I lived up the hill on the south end of Pleasant Valley, in Kingsgate. The best pepper steak sandwich I ever ate was made in that sandwich shop in front of the pool hall on the south side of Riverside. My wife and I were talking about that sandwich the other night. Superlative. The poorest time in my life. Also the most fun. Much of the fun I had was between that end of Riverside and Zilker Park on the other end, with ARMADILLO WORLD HEADQUARTERS right in the big fat middle of it! I still believe that the back lawn of Barton Pool is the center of the universe. Where did the time go?

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...
