Totally agree with all the above. I'm old school too and have changed my thinking with all the new technology in oils and the vehicles now. I still like to change my oil within the first 1,000 miles but then follow whatever they recommend from there out. Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember those days and also when your oil was actually in a can and you needed a metal spout to pour it.

What this guy said. Just go to setting on your radio, then maintenance and disable it. Use your dash for oil change indication. This option is for people with lighter hair color.

LMAO, boy I remember when I would try to open up a can that was behind the seat in my Chevy and the can would collapse from being hammered while off roading. For those that haven't seen these, the top and bottom of the can were metal, and the can itself was cardboard just like the Pillsbury roll cans that you whack to open. Going back when I was real little, the gas stations use to have the oil in a rack at the pumps (back when everyone was more honest) AND they were in a glass bottle. Ok time to retire lol

Ah yes...oil memories. I drove a 1930 Model A Deluxe Roadster for 27 years and a "special" 1965 Mustang convertible for 16....lots of fun times working on old equipment. We used to by 40 gallon oil drums on the farm and use that oil in a wide variety of vehicles. Although we blew up plenty of experimentals, it was rare to see any damage in our usual trucks, cars and tractors. Stock engines these days are built to such close tolerances i can hardly believe its possible for assembly line work. We used to have to rebuild them "looser" in order to race them, they wouldn't rev quickly enough otherwise. Oil consumption was significant, but they weren't driven on the road so it didn't matter.

Wouldnt any big particle be caught by the oil filter and anything smaller would pass and realistically be harmless to the engine? Just something I've been wondering about, because the consensus overall from oil companies, who would want to tell you oil, and manufacturers is that A. you dont need to break in engines like you used to, B. there is no need to change the oil during the first couple thousand miles.

I know in the first couple oil changes you will probably see a very slight glitter effect at the bottom of the pan, but these particles are probably too small to do any harm and are just reflecting some light.

What are your thoughts on this? Like I said, just some stuff I've been thinking about. I personally changed my oil already whether in reality it was needed or not. It makes me feel good and its cheap insurance.

Very interesting...thanks for the explanation...I'm old school but still willing to listen/read a valid point.

Had a 2002 Porsche, brand new. Mobile One, OW40 from the factory. First oil change at 15k or one year.

    Gotta love the 21st century.

Okay so my warning light came on at 4500 miles. I drove to the dealership and the rocket scientists there put air in my tires and told me to have a nice day.

The next day I went back and someone smarter said they would have a real technician go through it. I got it back later with nothing but the initial check and the light was out and has not come back on. I am thinking that this is going to happen to everyone and the light comes on at 4.5K miles as a heads up to schedule the 5K mile checkup.

I am now a fan of having the early checks done by the dealer as on my 2nd Gen. the steering rack leaked from day one and I did not catch it until 70K miles and it cost me to have it replaced.

Ok I got the MAINT REQRD light flashing about 8 times at start up then it went out. I went to the manual and it read "oil change reminder". My question is, is the light indicating that the oil needs to be changed NOW, or is it alerting me that I need to get my oil somewhat SOON? Here's the thing I have
9,384 miles and was planning on bringing in my truck in at 10,000 miles to get the oil changed. In my previous truck a GMC Sierra the oil light would come on by figuring wear, and not mileage. Thanks in advance folks be well

i just went to the dealership yesterday cause my maintenance light came out as well. thought it needed oil since its at 4700 miles. the service guy told me its only for tire rotation, top off fluids and multi point inspection. the oil change on these trucks are every 10k. oil is still where it suppose to be at..

oh and a free wash ;)
