I change the oil and top off fluids every 6 months (regardless of mileage) because I don't drive that many miles (retired here and don't get out much). I do this in April and October of each year due to the northeast weather conditions. I believe letting the truck sit for days at a time is worse than driving it too much.

I have done a lot of research about oil (too much), much of it on "Bob is the oil Guy". If you have not done this yet, I do not recommend it. It's like crack cocaine, so just say "No".
The production of wear metals actually decreases the longer engine oil it is in service. That is up until the additives in the oil are consumed, which is WAY longer than 10,000 miles with modern synthetics. No one at BITOG, to my knowledge, has seen a used oil analysis (UOA) that showed the wear metals begin to increase because the oil was left in too long. The first sign of oil past its prime is oil thickening, which does not seem to affect it's lubricating properties.
I ran across a post in one of the forums where a guy posted pictures of his late 80's Toyota 4 cyl. pickup rolling over 500,000 miles. He changed the oil at 20 to 25 thousand miles with regular Mobil 1 for the life of the truck (probably still going).
My suggestion is to change the oil and filter at 5k and then 10k after that with a good named brand synthetic. Sleep like a baby knowing that you will not have an oil related failure of your engine for as long as you can stand to look at the rest of the truck.

If you are lazy and you still want to throw money away, leave the oil in for 10k and every few months just put a couple of 20 dollar bills in the paper shredder. This is a lot easier than changing your oil every 5k miles and will accomplish the same thing.

I just took my truck in for a 10K oil change - they didn't do it @ 5K even tho I asked them to and asked them at the same time to lube - the dealer did NOT do either as it wasn't part of my 5K listed service. Man I was pissed .... had to do it myself.

Anywhoo.... So I took the truck in last Friday for my 10K oil change asked them to lube the drive line and change the oil AND I've got a rattle please torque down the U-bolts on the rear suspension. All done this time around. Had to take it to another dealer for service tho. They were extremely accommodating.... this time. Maybe they read my report to Toyota Care from the last trip to get serviced while I was waiting... at first they didn't even want to do the service cause I didn't have an appointment! All that changed AND the service techs got A LOT friendlier after my initial meet and greet! Go figure...

As mentioned - I do my oil changes 2x a year, once in the late spring and once late fall.... regardless of miles driven.
