Hi everyone I’m new to this so bear with me please,
This is the situation I bought a 2020 Toyota Tacoma sport it came with the service maintenance warranty and they say to change oil every 10,000 miles, well I’m old school I change it every 5000 miles well in August 14,2021 and I had oil change done at the dealership roughly at 14000 miles. Well today at just under 19000 miles it was time for a oil change which I did (every other oil change I do) for the maintenance deal (I hope this is making sense) found out that for the last 7 months 5000 miles I had no oil filter!!!

Wondering how much damage has been done to the engine? Or how much life has been taken out of the life of my truck? Any help?

Well dealing with the dealership they questioned the technician he remembered doing the oil change and said he was 100% sure he put an oil filter in it… The assistant manager offered me $500 for my trouble to try make it right!!
Is it a violation to put the dealership name on here??

Good luck proving the dealer left the oil filter out.

Probably, not much if any damage. If you are worried then have a compression test run. Otherwise, put a filter in it and call it a day.

Welcome to the forum :hattip:, sorry this has to be your first post.

Damage: Probably nothing to worry about providing you haven't spent the last 5000 miles on dirt roads. If the truck sounds good it probably is fine.

Run the new oil and filter for 100 miles or so and change just the filter out, you can have a look at the media and see if there is anything to be concerned about.
I'm sure there will soon be a :crapstorm: of folks saying you need to demand a 250,000 mile warranty or a brand new truck from the dealer -- it isn't going to happen unless you have a extraordinary amount of history with them, even then it probably wouldn't matter.
It is simply a case of your word against theirs, they win every time.

    Please keep us informed.

Ok... I'm confused. Wouldn't having no filter cause oil to leak out?

3ed gen V6 engines use a replaceable element filter. Refer to the photo below, the large O ring goes on the filter housing and seals it with or without an element installed.

    I will keep everyone informed.
I like the idea of doing a oil change after 100 miles!! it couldn’t hurt expensive but I plan on keeping my truck for a long time.

If it was me I would make sure it is documented in the trucks record with Toyota. Then never take it to them again for oil changes. Just for technical stuff that a qualified Tech will do. You know what's involved with the oil change. In my opinion and experience with the knuckle heads that do the oil changes its not worth the risk. You will have peace of mind doing it yourself and you can your time and do it right.
This is at least the second recent thread of the filter being left out.
Unless you run your truck hard I would be concerned with damage but I would still be pissed with the dealership.

Probably no need to change the oil, just the filter and top up the amount you lost.
The nice thing about the 3ed gen filter is it is easy to inspect the element, no cutting it apart required.

There was, and the OP was having trouble getting the dealer to believe they screwed up.

OMG - That't ridicules !!! I know I will never have anyone change my oil on my truck. Had a bad experience many years ago with my daughter's car. I like the advice you were given earlier. Put a filter in and run for 100 mi and change it again. Your dealership's service department sucks...

You aren’t the first this has happened to. I don’t believe you will have any issues nor suffered any additional damage. If the oil looks good, no contaminants that is, then nothing to worry about. We’re you able to inspect the oil?

I doubt there's little to any damage done. Think of a small lawnmower engine which have no filter at all & they can run for decades. I wouldn't worry about it, just change your own oil from now on. That way you know it's done right. Good Luck :)
