Yes it was really black but it didn’t feel gritty. The only reason I let the dealership do the oil change is because of the warranty. That’s why I change it every other time… but I’m done with this dealership… for many reasons and this was the icing on the cake

Yikes. Bad thing is no one can tell you what if any damage is done. Hopefully none since you had a change done after “break in”. And you are not high mileage. You will get tons of hypotheses like mine that you should immediately part out , but I think you’re good.

Yeah, Working at a dealership I can confirm Oil changes get screwed up. I also think it would be hard to prove that the dealership left it out.

Unfortunate for sure but personally I doubt any damage was done.
The Volkswagon Beetle's had no filter (just a coarse screen) and were air cooled and did fine on lesser quality oil of yesteryear.
That said you have every right to be PO! You had a service done and have every right to expect it to be done right.

Well dealing with the dealership they questioned the technician he remembered doing the oil change and said he was 100% sure he put an oil filter in it… The assistant manageroffered me $500 for my trouble to try make it right!!
Is it a violation to put the dealershipname on here??

Reading this makes me wonder how many times this has happened to others? They’ll just never know because they have others change there oil. I’m way to picky to have anyone else do an oil change for me.

There’s nothing wrong with posting the dealer info here, not sure it’s necessary since they’ve seemingly made things right.

    This and that...
There are a lot of oil additives you could use with this 100 mile change. Not quite sure which would be best but might help with the cleaning. This sucks but as most have said, I bet you engine is fine with the oil used today and how new your truck is. Take the $500 and treat yourself.

Please post the stealership's name. Places like this need to be avoided. The missing filter is one thing, mistakes happen. But offering $500 to shut you up is just sleazy.

As far as 5000 miles w/o a filter, I'd agree with most people's comments; put a filter in it and don't overthink it.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
Do you still have the oil? You could send a sample in to Blackstone and get a report on what's in it. Might offer some peace of mind. Otherwise, do your reduced mileage oil change as suggested and send in a sample of that. Good time to get a baseline of engine wear now at an early age.

Basically stock. OME 882s, HD Dakars and nitrochrgers, TG front bumper, custom rear bumper, 4Xinnovations sliders, RAT skids, Softopper, 255/85/16 ST MAXX's on 16" steelies, 1" B.O.R.A. wheel spacers Scangaugae II, deck plate mod, grey wire mod,ECGS bushing, diff breather relocation, alarm mod, defrost w/o compressor mod, de-badged, sockmonkey beside decals.
This would be a great opportunity to send a sample of the unfiltered oil to Blackstone labs for an oil analysis. that is if there is no chance of other contamination after it was drained.

    Edit: Grizzled beat me :(

Why is that sleazy? I think its a goodwill gesture that they didn't have to do. From their perspective, customer could have removed filter himself and wanted to get some freebies.

    What should they have done?

To me it comes off as an admission of guilt. If they were confident and stood by their technician, who was supposedly 100% sure he put a filter on, why offer anything at all? Tell the customer it's on them.

Alternatively, if they own up to it, offer the customer an extended engine warranty, or run an oil analysis, or borescope the engine to look for damage. Anything to actually help rectify the problem they caused and make the vehicle's owner confident that everything is OK.

But no. "Here's $500. We're cool right?" Sleazy.

I concur; your engine will be fine! I would take their $500 buck offer and use it to buy something nice for your truck from their parts department. Then I would leave and never return.

PS: I also like the idea of running with actual filter installed for a few hundred miles and then changing it out.

It's a cartridge type oil filter. You only replace the filter inside and the o-rings. It will still seal up without the filter installed.
