It's hard to prove it was the dealer, but I personally would want an extended engine warranty. They sort of already admitted fault by offering a cash payout.

Its mind blowing that people try to compare a lawn mower and a 70 year old VW to a modern day engine when it comes to oil filtration needs.

Either damage was done or not done in this case. If damage was done it may not show up for a long time. I personally think the OP should be covered for this this. I've seen some pretty crazy shit filtered out by oil filters during my days as a service manager.

OP, For what little it cost to do- Send the oil into blackstone labs. Get an analysis. This can be a good indicator of premature wear.
Ideally I would want to send the oil from the 5000 miles without filter and another sample after 100 miles with the new filter and for my obsessive mind I would send in again on the next oil change.

You’re probably glad you didn’t go the 10,000 miles before you checked!

Yep. Just one more reason to shorten up the change intervals.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
Another reason to never go to the stealership. Free oil change or not. I would push for extended warranty on the engine.

For those of you doing your own oil changes. It calls for 6.2 quarts are you guys buying the 5 quart jug plus two 1 quart bottles or just putting 6 and calling it a day? Also I was told once you open a oil bottle you need to use it or loses it properties. I want to start doing my own oil changes since I used up all my free ones.

Don’t just call it a day, always check it and get the oil as close to the upper mark on the dipstick as you can. Oil as far as I know stays good after opening for quite some time, brake fluid is the one that I’ve heard is the one to use it or lose it, now maybe that’s changed with the use of synthetics?

Yes I agree. I suppose I should buy 7 quarts and save the balance of the 7th quart for the next oil change.

I’ve always had oil changes done by someone else but thinking of doing my own on my new Tacoma. Seems pretty straight forward and I like the idea of knowing it has been done correct. Probably not much you can do besides take whatever credit they offer and throw a filter in and move forward. Sorry that’s how you entered the forums!

Take the $500, document the issue and response including the $500. Don't take it to that dealer again.

Not trying to endorse certain oil brands, but WalMart has 12qt for $59. You could just buy that plus a 1 qt jug and be set for whatever interval you choose (2 oil changes for 1 purchase).

I only put in six quarts. I found if I fill to the full mark when cold, it’s over filled when hot.

I stick with 6 quarts, it puts the oil level about 3/16” below full when cold

The mark in the dipstick is a cold check level. Where it is on the dipstick after its hot doesn't matter.

Ok, wrong. I’ll do it as I have for 40 years. I’ll follow the manual.

I don’t get it, if you’ve been doing it wrong, and you find out, why not do it right?

If you check the oil immediately after engine shutdown, not only is it slightly expanded because it’s hot, it also hasn’t all drained back into the pan. If you check it cold you’re ensuring that neither of those things affects the reading you take off the dipstick.

your comprehension is not catching what I am staying. And I am not doing it wrong, you just can’t understand

By filling it to the level I do when cold it ensures that I am not overfilling it when the oil is hot. I fill the crank case with cold oil.

The oil level is still where it needs to be. So unless you are a Toyota engineer, and can prove to me that the owners manual is wrong, I certainly won’t be listening to your opinion

My comprehension is catching what you’re saying. It was just poorly said the first time around. “it’s a hot fill line not a cold fill line” would have done the trick.

I guess I’m disproving your “you just can’t understand” statement when I say, clearly I was wrong, as the manual states to check oil level at operating temp and not cold. You learn something every day. Sometimes you get to learn it from someone who is being incredibly condescending, sometimes not, lol.
