No window on my 2016 Sport skid plate. Even if I did have a window, I would still drop the plate during an oil change just so I can visually check out the under side of my engine.

I hate the 3rd gen oil changes, the 4runner started it and tacoma shared the design.

2nd gen has what I consider the easiest to do.

looks like 6th gen 4Runner and 4th gen Tacoma will go back to spin-on style like the new Tundra.

Toyota probably realize that they messed up by going cartridge style
too may steps (o-rings, filter placement), each more step introduces chance of someone somewhere making a mistake

    pure speculation

    New Tundra has spin-on that's a fact

4Runner/Tacoma rumored new gen engine is the same as the inline 4 turbo found on Lexus NX, which uses spin-on

The 2.7L in the 2022 is so much easier to perform maintenance. This has become the perfect truck to teach my 16 yr old son how to do his own maintenance.

Cartridge is pretty much gone in all new architecture so ya. Even the 2GR in all the FWD models is being phased out. No more GR soon.

The oil changes on my 2007 4.0L V6 are a pleasure to do with the spin on filter on top of engine... even easier after installing a permanent filter drain hose. It's a shame Toyota went away from that set up.

OE skids may not have that. The 4R skids (TRD OR) do not.

I stopped crawling around on my hands and knees after 30. In before all the DIY weekend warriors who think they’re important because they change their own oil :crapstorm:

Nope, that's my bad, total brain fart. The basic "half skid" that came with my Sport (and most models) need to be dropped to access the filter. Somehow I've done one change through the pro and completely forgot about it. Sorry.

It’s less waste and conforms to go their standardization. It’s cost effective and uniform. Sorry it’s at an inconvenience to you but welcome to the new shit.

My guess is that the interface with the flat nylon flange is that any extra rotation beyond the torque spec deflects the flange and multiplies the preload. This seems apparent when folks who break or cut the flange off are easily able to remove the remaining portion.

It is just something different. No more messy that any other under vehicle oil filter. Top mount filters are a small fraction comparatively. No issues if you torque it to the spec on the cartridge.

Toyota oil changes have been the easiest I’ve ever encountered. Everything from 22R’s to the 5VZ and the 1GR’s it beats the pants off any Chevy, food or dodge I’ve had the misfortune of working on.

I agree, they are easy as hell compared to my old car. Admittedly I stopped doing my own after college. Then I only recently started doing it again because for some reason the idea of a $100 oil change pisses me off.

Geez. $50 pisses me off more than any other factor. Driving and waiting at a shop versus chilling in the garage with unlimited beer and fun wrenching.

The easiest ones I've encountered are on VWs. Filter on top and I always use suction pump. Can literally be done in a suit and tie. I don't wear neither but I did do it in front of my office several times. Toyota overcomplicated everything, IMO.
