ive been running 5w30 syn blend in my 05 v6, she has 122k on the odo..im getting a "tick" at idle and to about 2200 rpm, its most pronounced at idle in drive, i dont want to say "tap", sounds more like a lifter or cam follower. i know that OHC cam engines are typically more noisy than single in block cam engines, could this benefit from a heavier oil like 20w50? i can say the engine doesnt seem "hurt" at all, it runs great and has great power and throttle response. it uses very little oil if any. im convinced its not the exhaust manifolds either because it would go away once warm. is it typical to have this kind of noise on these engines at this mileage? it doesnt knock or tap at start up at all either when cold.

i live mobile so the climate is mostly above 30 and a good bit of humidity in the air, dont know if this would influence the oil weight choice or not.

20W-50 would be OK in the summer for an older vehicle - from the late 80s on back, but not in a 2nd gen Tacoma. I wouldn't run anything other than what the owners manuals states.

These engine tick a bit especially when their older.
