Hate being that guy to revive an old thread but just did an oil change for my first time on my 2001 3.4 automatic and used the recommended 5.5 I'm way over filled. I can't figure out why, I drained 3-3.5qts out (which was spot on for the dipstick). Also I'm using Mobil 1 5w30 high miles full synthetic. Anyways if it was overfilled and nothing felt wrong I wouldn't post here, but after the oil change I drove to the store and back (10 mins round trip) and twice had this feeling of not being in gear when i first try to accelerate from stopped. I would let up and it then it would go just fine but the truck also felt different. It felt smoother but almost sluggish or heavy through the gears, I tried to drive gingerly so I wouldn't cause as little damage as possible.

Me thinks you drained your transmission and added all the new oil to your engine.

In all fairness it is an easy mistake especially if your just trying to get it done quick. I went back to look and sure enough.. The oil pan is pretty hidden.. With only driven under 2 miles without a/t fluid I should be fine, correct? Also my dash has lights for a/t pressure and temp I believe, why weren't these tripped?

Try and sand the dipstick as suggested, if that doesn't work, spray paint the end if the stick white. I've done this and it works perfectly.

It is an easy mistake but remember... engine oil drains from the engine . If your laying under the truck without a engine over your head chances are your in the wrong spot.

    Same as everybody else...
I use a Fumoto valve so I don't confuse the two. I also send in a sample once a year to Blackstone having the valve makes it easier, and a lot less messier, to draw a sample. Just a thought...

I has been a while though. There was a time there that it averaged 2 per week.

you may have to take that somewhere for some tranny fluid. You might have someone tow you. Make sure you put the right stuff in the right place. Oh don't forget to drain some of that oil. Sorry that happened Bud.

Don't think so. If there is, pictures please?

'Cause they don't exist? You're lucky your trans even has a dipstick. Many newer vehicles don't.

    Very likely.

Do not drive the vehicle till you get the excess oil out, and the trans refilled.

There is good news though. I'd wager you'll never make the same mistake again.

I just chescked my oil this morning and it looked way over filled. Drained out 5quarts though. Re filled oil and you can see it's a bit easier to read but there's still splatter on the dip stick. I thought I had blown a head gasket or something.

When I have the time, what I do is :
    1. Remove dipstick, wipe off, and wait 30 minutes (I like to do it after it sits overnite)
    2. Then, re-insert dipstick and measure the level.

This allows the tube to drain.

I had had troubles seeing the oil on my dipstick too. I scuffed it up with emery cloth today - wiped it off good and checked the oil and I could clearly see the oil line. Quick fix - works great - took about 3 minutes total. :)
