Did you get a chance to do a quick oil level check just after you shut the engine down just for reference?

I didn't, it looked like a lot of oil on the ground and I was busy rage dialing the dealer and AAA.

if you didn’t get any lights on the dash most likely you are fine. As someone else stated, I would push this issue to the top and make sure they include an extended warranty on them also before you sign any paperwork leaving with the truck make sure you read the documentation of what they did And make damn sure you get a copy of it in writing

My first oil change resulted almost the same. Drove home for 15 miles from the dealer. Parked in the driveway to see oil dripping out. Tech "forgot" to put a new O-Ring on the filter cannister. Dip stick was dry but no lights were on. Called the service manager and he brought 6qts and a filter to my house. I drained about 3qts of oil out and put a new filter in. No issues in 35,000 miles since.

Another reason I never, ever let the dealer do anything to my cars.

I'd lobby for an extended warranty and other goodies... then find a good independent shop that works on nothing but Toyota.

they said it was a "crushed o-ring". there was still oil in the truck and there are no engine codes. they redid the oil/filter change, replaced the drain plug and o-ring, cleaned up the undercarriage, washed the truck, and sent a lyft to pick me up.

according to the service advisor, they said it was a deformed o-ring and/or improperly installed, and said the tech was responsible, and reprimanded. that doesn't do me any good but the fact that there was still oil in the truck makes me feel like it could have been worse. they apologized, so at least they didn't try to make up some bs. i have it in writing that they acknowledge the installation of o-ring as the cause.

as people are saying, probably the only way to avoid this is to just do it myself in the future. but i have a service plan that is about to expire so i guess someone is trying to tell me something.

I'd have pushed for extended warranty. It may not show any symptoms now, but what about in 50K miles?

Thats the Toyota Automatic Oil Change feature. Supposed to only happen in Park on Sundays in your driveway with a pan underneath. Apparently there was a malfunction.....

    Right!
All indications are that the dealership screwed up.
The smoke was the oil burning off of the exhaust pipe .
Most likely you shut it down in time.

I have 5 years of oil changes included since every vehicle my dealer sells includes the mandatory Toyoguard Platinum. BS like this reinforces my decision to eat the $30 and not have the minimum wage oil change jockeys at the dealer touch my truck.

Well. Between 2 cars with cartridge, once I caught myself not installing the filter, the other time I put o ring on the wrong groove and sixth sense told me to check.
    Happens.

Good thing you caught it quickly. Since there were no lights and oil still in the engine, move on with life no matter how frustrating it may be.
