Found this article online of testing different motor oils. That are offer off the shelf at any auto parts supply store. Even tho it was done in 06 it was very interesting how they tested them. Royal Purple R51 came on top at $38 for 5 qt jug. Tho I still like my $17.50 Walmart oil.http://www.animegame.com/cars/Oil Tests.pdf

I just attended a presentation from a Shell engineer about synthetic oils and how they are made, what the various additive packages are made of, etc. Pretty interesting stuff.

It's always interesting to see Royal Purple on the list. For no other reason than it's a pretty expensive product that's not always applicable yet many people buy it because they believe "it's the best". Our motors don't require or even need RP. Same with Amzoil. That doesn't mean it's not a good product, just that a Taco doesn't really benefit from it. Your truck benefits more from regular oil changes with a quality oil product.

By comparison, if you went the RP route and drove your truck 100k miles, that'd be around $3k just for the oil (assuming you drive 6k miles between changes) compared to $767 for the Shell or $607 for Pennzoil. Would your truck last significantly longer or perform significantly better with RP? Probably not. Plus you'd save $2300 which you could probably better spend on a set of tires :)

Thanks for posting-it's an interesting article.

I agree with about what you're saying about an over kill on RP synthetic. You look at regular motor oil, the protection requirements meet even exceed the manufacturer's requirements to use. So it depends on wa
t color bottle to buy. Synthetic motor oil is a notch higher, excellent for added protection. Especially as far as to the point if the motor starts to overheat, also keeps the inside motor clean. Had a gas mower started smoking, so I started using synthetic motor oil and got 3 more years out of it. Wal-Mart brand synthetic at $18 changed every 6,000 miles would be about $300 dollars to change 16.6 times for 100,000 miles, versus Royal Purple at $631

I'm in no way an advocate for buying from walmart, but they sell Mobil 1 full synthetic 5 qt jug for $24.

That's where I get my Mobil 1. Auto parts stores, even when on sale, charge more for Mobil 1 synthetic.

This has been my experience also. Mobil 1 is usually closer to $40 for a 5 qt jug.

I have zero issues buying from Walmart plus Mobil 1 has a $12 rebate until the end of the month.

Amazon has the 5W-30 for $25 bucks too.

I only buy oil when mobil 1 is doing their rebates. It usually happens twice a year (spring and fall). Pick up two 5 quart jugs each time. Usually end up with two for the truck and two for the car. Brings the cost down to like 15 bucks for 5 quarts.

You can also get some other rebates and get oil even cheaper. Quaker State recently had a deal that after rebate you basically got the 5 quarts for free.

I tend to stick to mobil 1 in the truck. The riding mower and car...get whatever i get the best deal on (which has been mobil 1 recently)

    Are floor mats a mod?
My understanding is that Mobile 1 is the only 100% synthetic oil. Is that right?

Used to be, but after all the lawsuits, some of the mobil 1 weights are highly refined oil like some of the others.

It really doesn't matter as it's all good. Even dino oil is better than it used to be. Changing the oil regularly is probably more important than what you put in.

Most synthetic oil is manufactured from natural gas or highly refined crude oil. Synthetic might be a misnomer but probably accurate to you say "I take this base oil, add these viscosity index products and additional additives to make this particular oil", yeah, you can argue it's synthetic. In a slightly different way of saying it, while refined from fossil fuels, synthetic oils are nothing like their non-synthetic alternatives.

So that magazine article tested all the oils at room temperature? How is that representative of anything?
