So I decided to do my own oil change and while using my Motivx cap wrench one of the plastic tabs broke, leaking oil. I have never struggled so much to loosen something. And I own a auto customizing shop so I'm constantly removing tough bolts and such. It makes me wonder if the dealership EVER changed my filter?? Plus it had been a little less then 10k miles since my last oil change and the filter was super nasty. So word to the wise...have a back up filter cap on hand or purchase the aluminum one.

Tighten by hand and remove with channel locks.

Not on the 3rd gen. Need a filter wrench to tighten to get the cap to fully seat. And channel locks will chew up the cap.

    • So you broke the cap for whatever reason.... is that your point?
    • Filters are supposed to be nasty.
    • What logic do you use that jumps from tight filter=>never change?

@Lancelotless next time be sure to maintain constant upward pressure on the cap wrench so it engages the flutes on the filter cap in addition to the ears.

There is a retainer clip that hopefully you noticed. Also the plastic gets damn tight no matter how lossely you "hand tighten" and liberally oil the o-ring.

No my point was just to advise ppl to have a back up on hand in case theirs breaks:) And Ive read where some dealerships were not changing filters w the free oil changes.

You're talking about the metal one? Does that even do anything? I don't see where it engages.

It's more important to oil the threads with the aluminum cap, because aluminum-on-aluminum will gall very easily on such fine threads.

Hammer and a screw driver is always a good last resort. Just make sure you got a replacement

Same exact thing happened to me. Dang filter was on WAY too tight and my buddy had to come over with a breaker bar. Finally got it removed and put the new filter in. Stupid me didnt really see the crack in the new housing until I put new oil in and started the truck. Boom oil everywhere. Doing my first oil maintenance was the worst experience lol.
